@Papiss

I've had an AmigaOne XE-G4 for years, and it took over from my A4000 as my main Amiga. It felt like a great upgrade, and runs lots of my Amiga software, and i'm sure the SAM would do the same for you.

ThanX.

@ Xeron:
Thank you. Feedback from someone who uses an OS4 is extremely helpful.

@Papiss

The cheaper alternative is to buy the Amiga Forever and install free AmiKit. You'll be able to read your old harddisk as well as run your old favorite programs at the speed that is FAR better than any of the original Amiga hardware can provide. In addition, there's a free Real3D plugin for AmiKit.

Just my two cents.

Half Belgian and half German, but Belgian is close to German. I don't know the culture over there well, but that might be like saying Scottish and British are close, which would put me in a bad spot.  ...

Currently, the only hardware that is about to be available is Sam440, that will give about the same performances than a MicroAOne. Compared to a classic Amiga, with OS 4.1 on a Sam440 you will get only advantages except compatibility with programs that directly access the hardware.

For years, programs have been ported to OS4 (same thing on MorphOS). I own a Pegasos and a MicroAOne for years and since the first day I never had regrets or nostalgia thinking at my A1200.

PDF, video, audio, camera, USB, Internet (OWB or Sputnik), PowerPoint viewing (with my PointRider :), multimedia (Hollywood), ... for all I need daily, I would never come back to a classic Amiga. An Amiga NG can do all the same things but better !

About word processing, you can run AbiWord thanks to Cygnix.

Efika is cheaper than Sam440 but Sam440 is faster, has SATA, standard format (easier to get a case), ... It also will run Linux faster for those that need occasional use of programs not supported on Amiga.

Now, I am aware of the turmoil that surrounds the Amiga- the companies, the law suits...
But I still want an Amiga, and not a clone. Perhaps it's psichological, but I want an "A" ingraved on the keyboard (do they still do that?..).

Then you want a real Amiga then.  Your not going to find a "A" engraved anywhere on the SAM440 mobo let alone on a PC keyboard.  Now if you want a "A" on it, will you buy something that the "A" owners may determine is an illegal product which is pirating their IP?  Seems to me, that is the opposite what you want.  Guess it's really how pure of an "Amiga" you truly want.

I haven't heard of any technical issues with the SAM440, which is good news compared to the POS Teron mobos that were pawned off as an "Amiga."  Unless AI has endorsed the SAM440 as the AmigaTwo, your not going to get that "A" you seem to be demanding.

Uh, whatever. As I said, the Sams with AOS4.1 is the new Amiga. How well is OS4.1 software going to run on other "clones?" Probably not well if at all.

There hasnt been a new Amiga since Commodore went under.  All machines are clones...I think this discussion was made many years ago. lol.    As for how well it will run on clones, I guess it will run "ok".  Look at the A1..ran fine on that clone.  Hopefully it runs fine on the SAM thing.

Anyway, glad you'all finally have something to run OS 4 on, it'll put some fire under the behind's of the MOS team to come up with more great innovative ideas.  :-D  :-D

As far as your "insight" to what will happen w/4.1 and SAM in regards to the court case.. Man, I hope you're right.  I'd hate for SAM to sell w/4.1 then all of a sudden another lawsuit gets slapped on them and that is put to an end.  You'll end up with users running SAM + 4.1 with no future updates available.   I'm glad I'm not in that boat pinning my hopes and $$ on unknowns.

@Hans_

What C++ compiler are you using for AOS4.1?

The Amiga OS 4 SDK comes with GCC (version 4.x.x I think). An updated SDK that includes the new OS 4.1 functionality is in the works.
