program to trnasfer d64 d81 to 1541/1581 drives
« on: August 25, 2008, 10:41:19 PM »
Im looking for a program that will allow me to transfer d64 or d81 files on my Miggy directly to my 1581 or 1541 via a parallel port cable...

I see a few out in the web yonder but which one would you recommend i.e easist/quickest etc.

Don't know about the software but the complete kit (proper cable included) is available from Vesalia.

If it is an easy1541 cable then be careful, as they tend to be drive killers (It is also painfully slow). Note that you can write 1581 disks directly from an Amiga (search for 1581 on aminet). For writing 1541 disks via transfer cable I recommend using a PC and an XM1541 or XA1541 cable.

Hi,

Yep, first you need an XM1541 or XA1541 cable. If you're handy with a soldering iron an XM1541 is pretty easy to make up. Do a google for more info...

The best software to use (I use a Win XP PC) to do the transfer is gui4cbm4win:

This combination works fine for .d64 images to/from a 1541, not sure how it would go with  1581 though...

Cheers,

Mike.

PCs do work better if you have one. Old MSDOS boxes work best using a program called Star Commander and a X1541 cable, or newer variant of the cable.
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

The absolutely best and easiest way for me was the MMC64 cartridge which can locally, from your C64, transfer D64 images from the MMC/SD card onto the 1541 and the other way around. Thank god I don't have to mess with the X1541 series of cables anymore. Having to have a dedicated PC with a compatible parallel port and preferably a real MS-DOS environment + a compatible X1541 cable was a pain.

I believe that the newly released Retro Replay cartridge is also able to perform this function.

thanks for the info guys..I guess I should have been more clear in that I already have an XE1541 cable and I currently use an old 386 PEECEE box soley for the purpose of running star commander....I was hoping to find a similar program for my 1200 so that i can free up some desk space :-?

For getting D81 images into disk, you only need a PC with a 3,5" floppy connected via floppy cable (USB drives don't work), fdrawcmd driver and 1581Disk utility by Simon Owen. D81 images can be created with StarCommander.
