Dyna Res and SHAM
« on: May 30, 2008, 06:46:43 PM »
Hello, is there a way to view "The Look" dynares on the PC?  I have the file from the NewTek demoreel 3.  XNVIEW can't display it correctly.  I love that picture.  I'm also in search of SHAM pictures to view on the PC and my Amiga.  I found a great program that converts pictures to LBM HAM6 called GBREF on the PC. Thank you for your help.  =)

The picture is here on this site.

The Look - Amiga.org Photo Album

I believe I converted that for JC.  I used ADPro on the Amiga to convert it JPG.  Sorry I have no idea if there is a PC program that can convert those type though.

I've tried watching that demo on WinUAE and it won't display that picture as well.  :(  Rest of the demo is fine though.

I've seen the JPG version, but JPG puts in all kind of phony colors (49,808 to be exact from what should be no more than 4,096) and it doesn't look as good as say PNG, TGA, BMP or any other true color conversion.  =(

Thanks.

Yeah, you're right.

I just went and converted it with ADPro and made sure there was no dithering on or anything.  Saved it 100% uncompressed as both BMP and PCX.

Files are here...

TheLook PCX

TheLook BMP

I tested both version to see how many colors they had (used a plug in I have for Photoshop) and both version say the same thing, 65 colors.  Which is probably about right, really, for the actual picture. It's mostly all shades of one tan color.

$ wget http://aminet.net/misc/antiq/DemoReel3_2.lha -O - | lha -pq2 - TheLook | ilbmtoppm | pnmtopng - > TheLook.png

Result here:
http://www.iki.fi/sintonen/pics/TheLook.png

BTW the picture is not HAM. It's 16-colour hires laced (& overscan) with custom palette for every scanline.

65 colors

It makes sense if you consider the fact that each colour is only 12bit (4bits per gun). In this particular picture the colour range is quite limited and thus it results in relatively small number of different colours.

Thank you- The picture is a great example for dyna highres.  The Apple IIGS works the same way as Dyna highres, only it's limited to 320x200 instead of 640x400.  Now I would love to see some SHAM pictures converted to the PC and on my Amiga 500 (1 meg).  Shame is HAM6 per scan line- 16 fresh colors plus the Hold and Modify for every scan line.

Thanks everyone.

IIRC, the SHAM video format would only store vertical copper data for up to 200 pixels.  On PAL systems it was rather useless due to the lack of the other 56 pixels of vertical resolution.

Also, IIRC, the Brilliance paint program on the AGA chipset Amigas mixed copper palette changes with HAM8 mode to get their truecolor appearance.

Is there a TGA or BMP to SHAM program for an Amiga 500 with a megabyte?   Next is their a SHAM to TGA or BMP for an Amiga 500. Or can I find a PC program that does the converting such as GBMREF which allowed me to convert BMP to HAM6 or HAM8 LBM.

Thanks.  =)

Since TGA has alpha-blending standard in the format, I doubt you'll be able to convert them to Amiga format easily.  Likewise if you start with a 24-bit image in BMP format you'll have to convert it to something else before the Amiga can use it since BMP started as a Windows-specific file format.

GifMachine might do what you want on the A500 assuming you have at least Kickstart 2.04 .  I just did a little searching on the Aminet to find it.  I've never used it myself.

Yeah, my goal is to view convert all kinds of pictures I can get and convert them to SHAM.  Then back to my PC for viewing.  Since my Amiga has an RF converter, the quality sucks.  Besides it's fun to see what my Amiga 500 and my Atari ST can do with their respected formats.  I love my GMBREF program on the PC, only it's limited to only saving to HAM6 or HAM8.  So SHAM save.

GBMREF actually will save SHAM to BMP!  The program reads SHAM formats.  =)  But it only saves to HAM6 or HAM8.  Now to find something that can convert to SHAM that isn't GIF.  GIF is only 256 colors.  On my Atari I have a program that actually converts TGA files to several ST formats.  Looks better than the GIF to ST programs.  GIF2SHAM or HAM6 wouldn't do the Amiga justice.

Thanks everyone.
