Can't get "Information" from Workbench icons
« on: May 30, 2008, 05:36:21 AM »
Hmmm. I'm really scratching my head over this one. On my 3000 running OS 3.9, when I select an icon and either do the Amiga-I thing or choose Information from the Icons menu, I get nothing. The Information window does not appear.

Anybody have an idea what my problem is?

This has been the strangest problem I've encountered on this platform. Could not get info on icons and also couldn't rename icons. Odd stuff. I never got to the bottom of it, and so ultimately I have started from scratch and reinstalled everything on the System partion and now everything works as it should.

Weird. Probably something I did -- so I'll try not to do it again, whatever it was!

Hi,

There are 2 parts to an icon. Too see the second part you must "Show All". The part I think your missing is the "Hidden" ".info" File.

You can copy it from where it came from or duplicate another one of the same type and change tooltypes and such.

Nah, all the .info files didn't disappear. I could see all the icons like normal. But for some unexplained reason I could not show the Information window or even rename ANY icon anywhere.

With a clearer head today (and it's not too clear since I just tried to do Amiga-M to switch programs on a Mac) I believe I screwed up something to do with the GUI libraries installed. MUI, ClassAct, ReAction, or something. I don't even remember what all was installed before, but it was way out of hand after moving files around between Amigas.

Either one thing conflicted with another or was missing a needed component.

Try uninstall ClassAct and MUI first, and leave only ReAction to see if it works.

...or try SnoopDos to see if you can catch anything.

Too late, as I already became so frustrated with the whole situation that I reformatted the SYS: partition and reinstalled OS 3.9, BB 1 and 2 and my own utilities, fonts and user-startup assigns.

I think perhaps ClassAct is not installed now and could have been my problem. Likely was, in fact, as I recall a ClassAct installation script was among the stuff on either the X-Surf driver CD or the EasyNet CD (don't remember which) that I was fussing with yesterday.

Anyway, it's all working now, including the new X-Surf card.

I'm not up to it today, but I've got to get file sharing working now that I have three Amigas on the network. Another day, another thread!

Thanks for the advice, guys.

ClassAct and ReAction are the same thing. ReAction is built into 3.9, so don't install ClassAct over it - it's older and will break things, resulting in the symptoms you describe.

That's exactly what happened then. Live and learn.

Thanks, Matt, and everyone.
