DF:0 BAD ???
« on: May 14, 2008, 09:09:07 PM »
Arghhh...

I was just spending a few minutes with my newly acquired A2000.

I have quite a few disks, and was attempting to try a few.
After several disks didn't work, read errors and the like, the disk icon now just says DF:0 BAD.

The icon remains the same even if the disk is removed.
The icon remains even after restarting the workbench, with no disk in the drive.
The icon remains the same even if I disconnect the drive, of course the machine is powered off and unplugged, and restart the machine.

What happened?

The drive is dead?
The controller is dead?
I am dead and just haven't realized it?

Any ideas?  How can I remedy this problem?

I have an external drive that seems to work, should I scavenge it for the drive?

Cursing didn't help...I"m off to work, any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a disc cleaner?

Have you tried another floppy cable in case its that?

It may be that your floppy drive has had it.
Try

http://wwww.amigakit.com

They will sort you out.  But tell them what version of mobo you have they will need that.

The drive cleaner disk is a good idea. Run that a few times and also use a can of air in there to blow out any cruds.

Check the mobo chips : CIA, fuses, etc...

OK, I'm game...

How do I go about 'checking' the CIA chips?
What fuses am I looking for?

the usual way to test CIA chips is to swap them and see if something other doesn't work (keyboard, no boot, etc.).

I think its just the cable.
Better sorry than worry.

Or may be an old virus !!!

Try an empty system if you can (no hdd, no eflash....), just the floppy with its cable (are sure of the sense ? does it damaged or twisted ?)

If you have an external drive and kick >1.3 try to go in the early and try to boot on it.
Keep the Faith !

Hmmm...

The external drive works.

I had to sort through quite a few disks, I guess I have lots of dead ones.

Can I assume that everything else is ok?  CIA, fuses, etc?

I now have a new question...

Should I not be able to access the/an early startup menu?
Nothing happens when I hold both mouse buttons down at boot time.

I am certain the mouse is good.  I received it from amigakit when I ordered my a1200 a while back.

I've had that twice before, one internal drive & one external.

Internal, the drive was cactus, threw it out.

External, the controller PCB had lifted tracks, fixed with some soldering.

I figure, as stated above, it could also just be the cable, but I reckon it's probably not anything on the motherboard. Easier for a drive with working parts & such to get worn out, etc.

PZ.

does the FDD make any sound? when you insert diskette?
if not, check the power connector on drive, it usually breaks , move it a bit. (might need resoldering)
Better sorry than worry.
