IDE device not found when booting from SCSI HDD of A4000?
« on: April 05, 2008, 10:41:34 AM »
Hi Guys,

I've bought an IDE to Compact Flash card adaptor with the intention of having it as the 4th IDE device in my A4000 together with my HDD, CDrom and Zip drive. Unforunately that plan is not going to work as it dooesn't like my 4 way IDE interface and will only show up as as Master (Unit 0) on an IDE lead connected directly to the A4000's motherboard :-(

I've checked that CF card can actually be seen by booting into a Workbench floppy with the CF gadget connected as master and my IDE HDD as slave, and then using FindDevice. After it was seen ok, I put fat95 in L of the Workbench floppy and an edited CF0 driver into Devs/DOSDrivers of the floppy. I was then able to read both a FAT formatted 64MB and a 1GB CF card.

Obviously I don't want to boot into a floppy, so as an alternative option I am now trying to boot into my SCSI HDD on an Oktagon SCSI card and be able access the CF card on the IDE lead.

In normal use I am able to boot into OS3.9 of my SCSI HDD and be able to access my IDE HDD, IDE CDrom and IDE zip drive with aid of the currently removed 4 way IDE interface. However, for some reason when I boot into the SCSI HDD only the IDE HDD as slave (Unit1) is being seen by FindDevice. With the IDE HDD removed nothing is seen by FindDevice of course.

Can anyone please tell me why the SCSI HDD cannot see the IDE to CF adaptor as master (Unit 0) on the IDE lead? What could I try to solve the problem?

Thanks in advance
A4000 Mad

Hi there,
i think your cf controller does not like the ide.device you are using.i mean the 4 way device (idefix.device),while the original (ide.device)found on the disk is "Compatible".
try to use the latest device and try other ide.device programs.
idefix, allegro , asimcdfs .all update the ide.device routines.
also do you have the latest "youride.device" version?
go to a cli,and run
version youride.device and report back the revision.

But you mate could really update your miggy .
why dont you get a 4091 scsi card or any other dma enabled scsi contoller. You will really explode the disk transfer.
consider the fastest solution.

Some CF/IDE adapters is set to MASTER by default. And some of them do not have the option of changing it to slave.

Why? When a CF card is inserted to these adapters they should appear as a normal IDE harddisk. No need to install any drivers at all.
If you wish to use CF as PC - Amiga transfer device I am sure you will have more luck in using a PCMCIA - CF adapter like this Ooops. my fault. was in A1200 mode...  :-D
You said something about a zip drive, didn't you?

Try booting the machine from floppy with WB and hdtoolbox. Format the CF/IDE device as a normal HDD... And it should appear as a normal HDD. And make sure it is changeable between master and slave.

How easy is this controller to get hold of?
Amiga 1200 Tower Os 3.9
BPPC 603e+ 040-25/200, 256MBram, BVIsionPPC, Indivision AGA MK2.
Amiga 2000 (rev 4.0) Os 1.2/1.3
2088 bridgeboard, 2MB ram card, 2091 SCSI.
Amiga 500+ Os 2.1
Derringer 030, 32MBram, Buddha in sidecar, Indivision ECS.
Amiga CD32

4091 ....scsi dma enabled devices are like a desiese to me..
Get a, accel.
you will find one at 200e - 300e price range.
And you will have 128mb ram as well.
you can find scsi dma enabled board and 200e is not a fortune at all these days....

Thank you Amijlm & pyrre

I guess the Oktagon SCSI card has to have at least one fan :-D

I can't find 'ide.device' in Devs of OS3.9 or the Workbench3.0 floppy disk. Yes, I use an IDE zip drive when the 4 way buffered interface is fitted.Your replies gave me an idea. I formatted a partition of the SCSI HDD that I wasn't bothered about and copied only the contents of the modified Workbench3.0 floppy disk onto it (blue icon)

I can now boot into that partition and access the FAT formatted 1GB Compact Flash card 3B69-1AFD 8-)

So what is on a Workbench3.0 floppy that is missing or different from OS3.9? :-?

it is strange the 4 way adaptors works.
anyway,glad you worked it out.
and yes,i will soon plug a cf card my self.
It looks a pretty easy way to transfer datas

@ AmiJim

Thanks but you misunderstood mate. The IDE to CF gadget does *not* work on my 4 way IDE interface. To be found by FindDevice the gadget has to be master on the first position of an IDE lead connected directly to the A4000's motherboard. I can remove a green jumper to set the gadget to slave, but it is not seen at all as a slave device.

Does anyone have a clue as to why I can boot into a partition of the SCSI HDD that contains only the modified contents of a Workbench3.0 floppy disk?

i.e

What could be on the Workbench3.0 floppy disk that is missing or different to my installation of OS3.9? :-?

The Compact Flash cards glow icon is on the boing ball

@ motorollin

Many thanks for your help via E-mail with this one :pint:

A new installation of OS3.9 on top of an OS3.0 partition was required to solve the problem. But I can now boot into the SCSI HDD and have use of a FAT formatted CF card for transferring data between an A4000 and a PC 8-)
