Actually, the 74ALS is a family "upgrade" from the old 74F, but with less consumption (and less heat dissipation, of course).

Is the 2ns difference in propagation delay between the 74F and the 74ALS going to give better stability? Or is the power consumption of the 74F too much for this application?
