Amiga 24bit RGB to HDMI
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:31:45 AM »
Does anything exist that will convert the RGB Video out of an AGA Amiga to DVI/HDMI?

If not I am considering designing such a piece of hardware.

How expensive?

What type of price would people be willing to pay for such a device for retro computing needs?

A quick look on google shows converters over $1000, insane.
And I really don't see the need for it because there are affordable rgb->vga upscalers. And most monitors still have a vga connector.

Cypress CS-720PHD scales and converts RGB (using Scart-connector) to 720p HDMI. Price given by finnish reseller is about 100EUR. You can probably get it even cheaper somewhere else.

This taiwanese Cypress also makes good and relatively cheap other converters too (RGB->Component, RGB->VGA etc.).

My understanding is that all affordable RGB-> VGA upscalers are not 24bit (instead 565 RGB).  Or don't handle the whole SD/FF thing.

Unknown if this is 24-bit or 16-bit. Someone needs to get a look inside, I've not been able to find any details about which chips this box uses.

Do you have any English links for this product?

Given the tech specs the site did mention I would be pretty sure that it is 16bit.  If it was 24bit I think that would have included 16M colors or 24bit.  (they never seem to mention the not so good parts of tech products)

24-bit on a device with analog RGB in is problematic, you need to oversample to get a reasonable quality range.

If you choose to go ahead and make your own one of these you should consider making one that plugs into the video slot (which has digital RGB). This will require a harness for the Lisa and Alice chips for A1200 (to re-create the video slot).

DonĀ“t forget that AGA only produce 18 bits (262144 colors) in HAM mode without trick... and the rest of time it's just in 5/8 bits mode for games...

@CLS2086

That's just nonsense. AGA colours are 24bit, just doing 18bits would suck qualitywise.

HAM8 does produce more than 18 bits without any tricks, too (the lower 2 bits per gun - total 6 bits - are carried over from the base colour).

Ok, AGA get a 24 bits palette of 16m of colors, but can only display 262000 colors (18 bits) simultanously without trick.
Am i wrong ?

You are not supposed to use the bits to confuse the number of colours that can be displayed (limited by other factors) with the quality of those colours...
