Wanted: SOUNDPROBE audio software.
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:48:44 PM »
I've tried all the others, but haven't been able to find a copy of SoundProbe for the Amiga.  If you have a copy, or know where I can get one, please PM me.  Thanks!

I would like to get the latest version, if possible.

I'm located in Canada.

I have the last version of SoundProbe 2 obtained directly from the author. At the time he had just ceased Amiga development and said he was happy for it to go freeware, at least unofficially.

It is rather good audio manipulation stuff. Though 68k runs so slowly...

What's your mail address? And I'll mail you the disk images :)

@mr_silicon:

If the author agreed to spread it freeware, you can put it on a public place, such as Aminet, for the benefit of all.

Although the author (Dave O'Reilly) was happy to give me a copy of the Amiga version, I think HiSoft would still own the rights. I think it would get bumped off Aminet pretty quickly, no?

However, SP2 doesn't seem to be available anywhere as ral-clan said. If there is interest in pursuing this then it might be worth contacting HiSoft and Dave O'Reilly. Wherever they might be now!

Just out of interest this is what Dave O'Reilly told me about the Amiga version in June 2000:

"Glad it will be of some use.

Unfortunately SP on the Amiga has such old code (about 4 years old, some 8 years old) that it is very out of date, and the effects are really poor compared to the current technology (i.e. the SP v2 about to be released on the PC), and not nearly as clean as they should be for todays audio. The Amiga doesn't have the financial backing to make it worth serious research and development, which is the only reason I moved to the PC after many reluctant months. The only hope the Amiga SP has is the Linux version which we are developing, this would allow a port back to the Amiga under Linux, the native Amiga SP is just too old to make it worth continuing. I hope you find it some use.

Cya ... Dave O'Reilly."

I don't know if a linux version was ever released?

Yea, Hisoft hasnt been in the computer business for some time now. I think the guy opened a coffee shop after he quit the Amiga/Atari biz.

I wonder if the parties involved would release it not only as freeware, but release the sourcecode like the BRB did with Bars&Pipes. Then we would have a chance at getting an OS 4 version!  :insane:

Nevertheless, a terrific program by every standard. Even the PC version was outstanding before it was bought by lame PC company Goldwave. I suspect Dave was being rather modest in that comment.
I have always the hope that once the Amiga user base is somehow increased (bring on the NG machines NOW) developers will be interested. I would like to believe that unlike Linux users that expect every desktop application to be free (either due to ideology or due to them being stingy but legal ex- Windows/Mac users) Amiga users would actually pay for a good application.
