Problems reading burnt CD/DVD...what's wrong?
« on: January 27, 2008, 12:20:45 AM »
I am having trouble reading a CD or DVD disc on my A1200/OS4 setup. If I place a file on a disc using my PC in either single session or multi session mode, either a CD or DVD disc, and then place the disc in my Amigas DVD drive the disc is not recognised. In a shell I type CD0: and I get "Disk not present".

All my original CD and DVD discs are read and recognised fine otherwise. There are even some burnt CD's I have which work ok (burnt by someone else using another setting?). Some of the burnt ones that work are the exact brand of the ones I am having trouble burning myself and reading myself.

I've had a look in the storage draw and there is "CDMRW", "CDRW", "DVD-RW", and "DVD+RW" files there. I am unable to mount any of these as I get a "Not enough memory available" error. I have 128Mb of RAM and am trying to mount them after a fesh boot with 100Mb or so memory still free.

I am thinking there is a setting somewhere I'm missing either when burning or on the Amiga. What is wrong?

Use a native Amiga CDROM format.

A good read is http://www.iol.ie/~ecarroll/amigacdrom.html

Yeah, I've been having the same trouble with discs burnt from my PC. Once in awhile they work, most don't like the Amiga.

All commercial type discs work fine.

Old cdrom drives don't like burned cd's, however consider the Amiga filesystem. it's not compatible with pc.

Nonsense. Both use ISO 9660.

Windows/Mac OS X/Linux don't support the amiga Rock Ridge extensions, but those are only used for protection bits and comments anyway.

What many consider "PC format cd filesystem" is actually another extension to ISO 9660 called Joliet. That also is backwards compatible, although having no support for it means you can get truncated/weird file and directory names.

I've never had any problem whatsoever with burned media on amigaos 3.x or morphos, be it cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r or dvd-rw.

All sorted. Instead of using the default Windows burning method, I tried using Roxio Creator Basic v9 instead. Works fine. The exact problem I still don't know, but this method works...

Thanks for the help from all...

I'm using some freebie open source tool on windows called 'InfraRecorder' It works great but I can't find a burn setting to make miggy happy.

And Yeah - it's all ISO 9660 to me...

I think this old drive is flakey...

some older cdroms (when reading.) don't like multisession disks. some don't like certain media (ask your drive maker for recommended disks.)

Eh? I thought the Rock Ridge extension was also used on Linux. And that it was used to be able to use longer filenames...
