Question About Amiga Speed?

I wondered if someone could help me with something that has been a little confusing to me.  I'm talking about the actual speed of processors.  Is an 030@25 the same speed as an 040@25?  What makes the 040 more preferred?  What would be the advantage of changing an a3000 from the 030@25 that it came with to an a3640?  Any help or explanation about the speed of these processors would be appreciated.  Thanks,

an 040 will perform twice as well as an 030 of the same speed due to the extra pipelines and features.

Same speed yes, does a program run faster on the 040 compaired to the 030, yes.

What makes the 040 more preferred?

The best rating to look at is the MIPS, thats how many instructions it can go through a second, for example a 030 may take five clock pulses before it finishes a move where as the 040 may do it in two.

What would be the advantage of changing an a3000 from the 030@25 that it came with to an a3640?

Programs would load and run faster because the 040 can do more instructions per second than the 030.

Mhz is just like RPM on a car, you honestly dont need to care about how fast your engine is spinning, you want to know how fast your car can go in MPH/KPH, same goes for CPU's.

i always thought 20=286 30=386 40=486...but as usual i'm probably way off!

thats a safe enough rough guide, also with an 040 you will notice better all round performance...not just in speed ie: multitasking, 3d games and demanding apps run way more smoothly.

The A3640 will give you a little more raw power, yes. But
when I swapped my A3630 with a A3640, disk access got
noticably slower.

If you want to upgrade your processor, I suggest you avoid
the A3640 if you can. It doesn't really provide you with
the full potential of a 040.

Yep. And there are heat and physical fit issues in a 3000 as well.

You do know that embedded 486 cpus (late models) can be run at anything from DC to 120MHz or more, don't you?

Also, the EC020 in an A1200 is clocked twice as fast as the 68000 in earlier machines, and has a full 32-bit data path and so can push things through twice as fast again. That can account for most of the difference.
