Burning Linux CD to DVD media?
« on: December 26, 2007, 05:07:36 AM »
I am currently out of CD-R media, but have a brand new stack of 50 DVD+R and I want to download, burn and install Linux to an older PC that is no longer used in the house.  Do any of you know if a CD iso image can be burned to a DVD+R disc instead of a CD-R, or CDRW?

Also, I am thinking that Ubuntu is the flavor of the month that most people here seem to be recommending, but I am open to other suggestions.

Before the Amiga only crowd questions why I ask this in an Amiga.org forum, this is the "Alternative OS" forum.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

but why don't you download DVD .iso
(Ubuntu has LiveDVD version)
Some DVD drives won't boot from DVD, but they do boot from CD, (like mine NEC 4550a). If thats the case, you can make a bootable floppy (SMB) or, better yet, modify grub.
Better sorry than worry.

Use DVD Decrypter from http://www.afterdawn.com/ to convert from CD ISO to DVD ISO then burn. Note that I have never tried this - just found it in a forum posting by searching Google for "burn cd iso to dvd" :-)

No conversion necessary, I just burned the plain cd iso to a dvd-rw. Works like a treat. :-)
I burned it with Alcohol 120%

Perhaps it depends on the software. The forum post I read said that the particular burning software in question wouldn't accept a DVD and kept asking for a CD.

Well, I vaguely remember that there was something with closing the cd... but I could be wrong...
Alcohol 120% rocks anyway.

You may also want to test drive arklinux. I just tried it out
and I really liked what I saw. Not sure if it will work on a DVD. I would just go ahead and burn your ISO to a DVD and see what happens. NERO does this it will give you the option for CD or DVD so i think this will work for your Linux Dist. that you have.
