msoert2.dll

Hi... again!
Just another problem before I leave!

Every time I load up MSN Live Messenger, I get the error "Could not find entry point to library msoert2.dll"

Does anyone know what this DLL file does, or where it is found? After a search I found it is not on my system.

I have the file here on floppy disk but really I just need to know where to put it on my system. Perhaps where the other DLL files are (which are where?)

Most .dll files are installed to C:\WINDOWS\system32. MSOERT.dll is described as "Microsoft Outlook Express RT Lib" by the tens of help sites that are found by Googling for the file name.

Once you have copied the file to the system32 folder, open a command prompt and type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msoert.dll" in case the file needs to be registered.

I did all that, but it now says when I do it

"MSOERT2.DLL was loaded, but the DIIRegisterServer entry point was not found.

MSOERT2.DLL does not appear to be a .DLL or .OCX file"

That just means the DllRegisterServer function isn't exported by the DLL. In lay terms, it's not a COM component, although self-registration isn't a strict requirement.

Do you have Outlook Express installed? Like many Windows components, Outlook Express is an integral part of the operating environment, whether or not you use it. (This isn't 100% true in desktop versions of Windows.) You can reinstall Outlook Express from Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components. (Start -> Run -> appwiz.cpl if you don't see it in Control Panel.) If Outlook Express is checked, uncheck it, click Next, and follow the wizard's prompts. Open appwiz.cpl again, check Outlook Express, click Next, and follow the wizard's prompts.

That should repair Outlook Express if it's broken. Note, you don't actually have to use Outlook Express if you don't want to, but you're using Messenger, so you've already had a taste of Microsoft's Kool-Aid. ;-)

Thanks Now we are getting somewhere, Outlook Express is not even listed there. I've just checked my hard drive and it is definitely installed.

I have tried copying the dll file from floppy over to the Outlook folder but the error message still appears.

Are you really running Windows XP w/ SP2? Have you done anything in an attempt to "improve" system performance by modifying .inf files, deleting files, or anything else? Is there more information in the error message? Typically, Microsoft prints the name of the function they were trying to find in the DLL.

Also, make sure you haven't disabled access to Outlook Express in Set Program Access and Defaults.

Hi, it seems I am using SP 1. Cannot upgrade to SP 2 unfortunately for reasons I can't go into without violating the forum's terms and conditions.

But doubt it is the cause of the problem since it worked fine for months until the Linux install messed everything up.

Where can I find Set Program Access and Defaults?

It's in Add or Remove Programs. It's also on the Start Menu if you're using the default Start Menu configuration.

Sounds like your Windows install isn't kosher....

I can't seem to find that option in add/remove anywhere, and Outlook isn't in the list

It looks like I will just have to put up with it, thankfully I am upgrading the system before Christmas, and NO I am not getting Vista!!!
