a million hits -my webpage-
« on: October 30, 2007, 10:41:02 PM »
Dear Friends:

My website has low traffic...because is only intended to showcase my 3d work. I am thinking about expanding my website..to put new exciting stuff on it..but I was afraid it might make my website so popular that it will have higher traffic than I can afford...But i had a new idea today...if I can make a popular website, that has a zillion hits...then I can get sponsors to put their commercial ads on my site...and use the money off ads to pay for my connection/website. Then I can afford the website costs.  What do you think?

how much traffic do you have to have before your costs increase to the point of being beyond your budget?

The accounts I have offer enough bandwidth I haven't even approached that level yet...I have one retail client and one architect showing his portfolio on my reseller account for $15.95/mth.

Reselling ads is fine.  If you have a developed site you can get Google ads on it easy enough.  If you're going to try to charge for individual sponsors you'll have to show real traffic....and relevance so they have some chance of getting a return on what they pay you.

Maybe you should offer a CafePress or Zazzle shop selling your 3D work on t shirts or something...that way people can get something tangible too...

Sincerely,

-- Sprocket...

Honestly it's pretty hard to make that much traffic to your site. The site my brother bought has I believe a 100GB traffic limit per month, and has 5gb disk space.  The cost was under $150 for having the space and the domain name.

Id say go for what you want the site to be, and see how the traffic goes.  The more traffic, id say to look at different possible solutions.

btw, its under $150 for paying everything for the year.  :-)

I think 1998 called and wants its business model back. :-D

No, I kid.  But seriously?  Find popular websites and do linkbacks.  That's how you start off driving traffic.  Then word gets out and hopefully you get picked up by the "current" and swept towards bigger traffic.
Back away from the EU-SSR!

I wouldn't count on ads providing the funds you may need. Text ads that don't bounce around the place I can deal with. Flash ads, Intellitext ads and the various other irritations are blocked here. The popularity of ad blockers and availability of extended "hosts" files shows how popular advertising is. I've never clicked on an ad and never will.
