3c589B vs Prism II in A1200 with '020 @ 28 Mhz +4MB Fast.

Hi folks,

What would likely be the performance diff between the cards in the topic on the system in the topic, KS 3.0 WB 3.0. Have both cards, wiring would be a PITA for the 3c589B though, but then wireless might have it's own issues. So wondering what prism 2 performance is like on an A1200, I've got the A1220 which gives me fast RAM plus double clock, I notice on the AIBB results at the hardware database, that the '020 really isn't much different than the '030 at similar clockspeeds, i.e. experience with 25-33 Mhz '030 accelerators should be in same ballpark.

Also wondering how much RAM each setup would burn, I'm suspecting the prism setup would need more due to WEP, but not sure how bad that will be. If it's like 100K then pffft, I can live with it, if it's like 1MB then I'm  liking the 3C589.

Only have my router set for 64 bit WEP (I know, I know) but it's the only setting I can get to work with all other wireless devices in the house. So shouldn't have to many issues there. (My security policy is as follows, if I find you on my network, I'll hook up a spare microwave oven to a satellite dish, get a bearing on your signal, aim, send 1KW of 2.4Ghz RF energy down a tight beam, then head for the smoke with a baseball bat, and look for the dude stomping on a flaming pringles can... :-D )

anyhoo, any info on relative performance of the two devices would be welcome,

I don't know exact answers to your questions, but on 030@50 I didn't notice performance differences with those kind of cards. Both wireless and wired gives >300k/s rates here. I'm using 64bit WEP too and I've been very satisfied to wireless option. I don't know about memory requirements either as it's not a problem for me ;)

I've been using Prism2 on a 2MB A600. Memory and performance should be a non-issue on a 1200 of that spec.

Great, I'll try the prism card 1st then. Got two actually, figuring the compaq is the one to go for (WDL-100 or something like that) the other is a belkin (which I seem to have mislaid) that someone else on here seemed to be having problems with.

Actually might end up using the 3c589, picked up a second wireless router at the weekend for $3, gotta check it out still. What I'm thinking is that it would be more convenient to use one router as a bridge down in my evil geniuses lair (unfortunately it doesn't have a laser) so I'll have 4 100Mbit switched ports down there. Wondering actually if the "super G" features on both routers might co-operate, then I could get a 100Mbit link from the evil genius underground lair to the evil genius penthouse.

Who cares when the maximum rate is ever less than 3 Mb/s?
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

The 3C589B is only a 10Mbit card and as has already been said, you'll only get about 3Mbit out of it on your Amiga (if that).

Heh, yeah wasn't expecting 100Mbit to the Amigas, was thinking more of the PC(s) that I will be using as the Amiga's b*tch.

WEP is done in hardware, so it doesn't affect memory or CPU usage.

ah, good to know. I wonder why PC minimum specs are stated at 200mhz or so for 'em. Thought it was "lucky" when I put one in a P120 laptop and it worked as good as a regular network connection.
