The king of all mice?
« on: October 01, 2007, 09:56:13 PM »
Hello again,

I managed to get an Alpha Data optical mouse and would like to know if this is a good mouse.
Anyone else got one of these?

Heres the link:

I had one of these aswell...guess what?? It sucked too!

It was alright when the mousepad was without scratches, but I still prefer some of my old Logic3 mouses.

Why not get a Cocolino? Then you can use any optical mouse you want.

Not to piss on your ebay win dude, but moto has the best solution.

What i didn't like about that mouse you got is you have to clean the pad all the time or it doesn't work right, and you have to keep the mouse on that dang pad or it won't work at all.

A ps2 interface with a modern optical mouse is better than you'll ever want. A good modern optical mouse works on glass, on your pant leg, a raw table surface, carpet, what ever. Never gets junk on a roller, etc.

The Boing! optical mouse is quite good but uses a mirroed pad (it's a rebadged early Mouse Systems mouse)

Well I was after real opinions so if it's crap then so be it. Reason I bought this is because of nostalgia plus to boast that I could have had the best mouse designed for Amiga. I guess that it isn't great but no doubt it's one of the first of this type and you got to start somewhere.

But this Amiga -> PS/2 converter, I have a wireless laser mouse that also has a USB -> PS/2, would that work with 2 adapters or will it work for only "pure bread" PS/2 mice? I gather wireless pure PS/2 ones will work ok?

It's hard to say. Lots of mice and kb usb type come with those usb->ps2 adapters and it's pretty standard. I have 4 optical mice that work that way and a small pile of those stupid adapters. You probably have one of those adapters lying around your crib too, if not you can find them at the pc shop for like 2 dollars. It's worth a shot.

If that pad that came with the mouse you got is in good shape and you take care of it and don't mind being confined to that pad you probably won't care anyway.

Only problem is, the dog only likes the mouse moving in one direction :-)

If the mouse works in a PS/2 port, then it will work with the Cocolino, whether it's a mouse with a PS/2 plug on it, or a mouse with a USB plug and a USB->PS/2 adapter (as long as the mouse supports this).
