Just Curious what Amiga Word Processors people are using.
« on: August 15, 2007, 11:46:54 AM »
As the subject says I'm curious as to what
word processors people are using on their
 Amiga.

As for me, it's ProWrite (V3.3.2), I have MS Word, and Apple Works, and Pages (Part of iWork), for Mac OSX, but
I've never found a word processor that I like or that is
easier to use, than ProWrite. When the Amiga is running
I will always use Prowrite over any newer word processor.
Plus I have a fairly good size collection of fonts on the Amiga, that I have collected over the years that work with
ProWrite.

I was just looking through my ProWrite box, it even has the sales recipt where I paid $123.48 (Tax Included) on
3-1-1992, to a store here in Okc called AmiTek Computers.

So what do you peope use?

Also an A600, and an A3000D bone stock, with 12...

Unfortunately I am not an Amiga user anymore! But when I had my Amiga 1200 I used WordWorth v4SE (which came bundled) and eventually a friend handed me a copy of Wordworth 5 which I used.

I then moved to AmigaWriter version 2.

These days, well the answer is obvious, MS Word.

Spirituality is for people who have been there.

I had ProWrite early on for Amiga, too.  (Got mine back in 1990 or so!)  I moved up to Final Writer and went through that series, though.  (I actually prefer one of the middle versions of Final Writer, overall [before they went to text blocks])

I'd say that version of Final Writer is still my overall favorite word processor, though I don't use it much except occasionally for creative writing, nowadays.

For me, it depends what I'm doing. If I don't want WYSIWYG, I use Protext. However, I'm starting to use GoldEd a lot more, especially as I re-installed it and got more options than I had before. Obvious;ly, when I first installed it (many years ago), I didn't know what half the options meant so left them out!

Both are quick, good spellchecking (Protext is especially fast in long documents) and easy to use.

If I want beytter layout, graphics etc, I use WordWorth V7. It also prints to my Postscript printer very quickly and higfh quality. Often, I use one of the 1st two and then import into WW.

Obviously, for high quality & ultimate layout, I use Pagestream, but that's not (just) a word processor ;)

FinalWriter 97... on a1200 and on Pegasos. I just like the GUI of it and overall usage more than on other programs. CEd is also fine :) And occasionally PageStream...
Daily MorphOS user and Amiga active.

I've pretty much been using ProWrite since it first came out in the mid-1980's with my first Amiga, an A1000. I upgraded over time as I got my A2000 and other Amiga's until I got the last update.

Today, my main Amiga is my Amithlon with OS3.9. ProWrite 3.3.2 still works fine on it, and it's super fast. It's still my favorite Word Processor an any computer.
A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G

Definitely FinalWriter 97 - my preferred word processor in general, independent of the platform. Wrote my diploma thesis (2002), a book (03) and my doctoral thesis (05) with FW97, using WinUAE.

Btw: IIRC, there was also some kind of Windows version in the end. Did it have all the features and a similar look & feel as the original one?

I use FinalWriter97 as well.  Love it!  I have Amithlon on my laptop mostly so I can use FW97 at work.  I used it all thoughout univeristy and wrote a 100,000 word sci-fi novel with it (working on the sequal right now... also with FW97).  The only thing I miss is 24bit printing and anti-aliased fonts (it would look WAY better with antialiased fonts especially on lower res screens).  My favorite features are its use of Sections, page/section tabs, and it has a great Thesaurus!  Plus, I just love the interface.

Someone commented that they didn't like FW97 using text boxs... appearently they're not aware that is an optional feature in FW97.  I like FW97's text boxes, gives it basic DTP functionality if you need it.  But, for example, with my novel there was no need for text boxes so I haven't used a single one.

Windows version is actually pretty good and has better font support.  One stupid thing though is it uses as different file format than the Amiga version (but it allows to convert between the two).

Thank you for the information - now I've just to find someone selling his copy. :-) File format doesn't matter, I'd just like to use it for casual smaller documents not worth firing up the emulator, i.e. the stuff I'm doing with Word normally.

Good luck with that.  :-(   I have a feeling it's going to be REALLY hard to come by.

I've used ProText 5.5 for many years. Never found a need to use (or try, for that matter!) anything else. Configurable, easy to use and pretty powerful. Cool program.
An Amiga is for life, not just for Christmas!

Plus a few more...

I used Kindwords, Pagestream (I know, more than just a word processor) and have seen ProWrite in the past.  I was casting around recently as I was adding software to the A1200T I bought and installed Final Copy version 1.3.  I seem to remember vaguely using it and liking it.

I also always enjoyed CygnusED Pro version 2 for some things.  I always used it when working on fixing the docs that came up managled at times in software.
