ROMS & OS

Excuse my ignorance, and if there is a website(s) that go through and give this info please let me know. My question is thus:

I have an A2000 can I run OS 3.9 if I put in 3.1 ROMS (of course I would have to buy the OS)?

What ROMS allow what OS to run? Is it a direct link like Roms 2.04 = OS 2.04 ?

EDIT: Also are there are Kickstart ROMS that only work with specific machines?

with 2.04 roms, you can run workbench 2.04, 2.1. Also wb 3.1. When you try to install, it will complain about kickstart, but if you install in another environment (UAE) and mount the hdd to a 2.04 machine, it'll work.

You also need an accelerator for 3.9, as well as 3.1 roms. I guess it needs at least 68030/8mb ram for reasonable operation.

WB 3.x won't work properly with 2.x roms.

You can run any Workbench of which the major version number (the one before the dot) is equal to or smaller than that of the Kickstart.

For example you can run any WB 2.x on Kick 2.0+ or any 3.x on Kick 3.0+, with the only exeption that OS 3.5 and 3.9 need Kick 3.1 and don't work with 3.0.

Kick 3.1 is not the only requirement for OS3.9. There are some hardware prerequisites which an unexpanded A2000 usually does not meet:

- 68020 processor (this is absolute minimum, the faster the better)
- 6 MB Fast-RAM (this is absolute minimum, too)
- a CD-ROM drive (OS3.9 is delivered on CD, so although it contains a CD driver, you need anotherone already installed to read the CD)

A graphics card is strongly recommended, both for speed and display quality.

You can run os3.9 on a2000 with some turbo card. I tried to run on my a500 (kick 3.1, 68030/14MHz, 5.5MB ram). It runs, but its performance is very slooow. I dropped some programs, because lack of memory, but the main bottleneck is the ecs gfx. With a "modern" gfx card it will run fine i think.
Anyway avarage speed of Os 3.1 with 640*256*16 color on my a500 is about the same with os3.9 on my ppc/68040/33MHz with 1024*768*16bit, voodoo3.

Kickstart ROMs are interchangeable only for A500/2000, later versions also run on A600 (all 16 bit machines). A3000D/T also use the same ROMs, apart from slots there's hardly any difference.
