AmigaOne/OS4 and SCSI cards
« on: June 13, 2007, 01:30:21 PM »
Someone is offering me a SCSI card (PCI) for a tenner  - anyone know if it'll work with OS4 on A1XE ?

its an Adaptec AHA 19160 job - 32bit PCI, 160MB bandwidth according to their website...
any ideas ?
or should I snap his hand off anyway ?

Does it have an lc53c8xx chip? Then it'll probably work. But I seem to recall that only Symbios and one other manufacturer make boards with that chip, and that Adaptec isn't it...

For me, UBoot was too dumb to spin up hard drives correctly, so I couldn't boot from it. Linux would spin up the drives and then OS4 could use them after a reboot, but a cold start was unsuccessful. Didn't work with my scanner either, though this was in the Update 3 days, I think.

interesting - I do actually have the Final Update so should be ok. sure I'd find a use for it - wonder how it would affect the kid's enjoyment of Scooby Doo on their PeeCee...

Hmm... never heard that a MB firmware affected the drive spinup (unless it has an onboard SCSI controller)... PS: Many drives have a jumper for auto spinup. In addition, most SCSI controllers have a spinup option in their Bios (if present).

Adaptec use their own chips on all their cards (few exceptions after acquisitions).
53C8xx chips are/were built/used by NCR, Symbios Logic, LSI and some 3rd party el cheapos. The chips are somewhat - but not fully - downward compatible to old drivers.
