Argh! My A1200 has rusted!
« on: May 08, 2007, 08:27:12 AM »
Well, that's what I get for leaving it in a box in the basement for so many years.  =(

Before I start messing with it and screw it up even worse, I figured I'd ask the experts.  What's the best way (or any way) to remove rust from around a computer's motherboard, incl. the little metal box that covers the RF output hardware?  :-?

Oh boy, I should take the motherboard out, stat.  Lemme see what's underneath...

First off the easy one... remove the lower part of the sheild (the one that gose underneath the Amiga) from the Amiga.

If you want you can then lightly grind away the rust if you want to save the metal sheild (usually not needed).

For the RF... it's soldered with 3 legs if I'm not mistaking... desolder these to remove the RF. Then remove the top cover by simply pulling it off (the lower part I'm not sure if it's lose or fixated in some other way aswell). Grind away the rust CAREFULLY as we need this sheilding again and don't want to bend it too much out of shape.

That's what I would do... if it fails I'm willing to buy that scandoubler of yours. ;-)

Additional to what brian recommends;

after you sanded away the rust (use 400 grade at least) run to the car shop and buy some turtle wax chrome polish. Wash and polish your tinware with that. Not only will it shine nicely it will also be coated with a thin layer of grease. This slows further rusting.

Have you stored her in a damp spot or have you spilled your drink over the amiga?

Erno
