Now this is truly aggravating...  :madashell:

I just managed to get the floppies for WB3.1 and installed it in my main Amiga HD.

Just in case of trouble I also copied the content of the OS3.9 CD (except the videos) on an old Quantum 210MB HD which is formatted in FFS using WinUAE 1.4.1. (BTW, prior to installing WB3.1, I formatted the drive using OS2.1 so this is NOT a SCSI problem)

I made sure in WB3.1 that device CD0: is in devs and not in storage.

Does it see any CD on the 3000? OF COUSE NOT... if I have the CDROM drive connected to the SCSI bus, the device CD0: vanishes!!! If I disconnect the CDROM drive, that device comes right back!! (I can see available devices in diskmaster 2)

Does it even see the 210MB HD? OF COUSE NOT... I can't see my formatted partion on the workbench but the HD is present in HDToolbox which, when I start it, tells me I can't create a partition in FFS because a file is missing in the L: directory...

Now, should I have to assume that it is normal for random files to be missing after installing WB3.1? OF COURSE I SHOULD... how stupid of me to think otherwise...

Sorry I didn't read the whole thread, so I might repeat some stuff,  but it should be simple. 1st you don't need the 3.1 disks for your CDRom to be recognized, just install a cdrom filesystem that's AOS2.1 compatible. I suggest IDE fix wich also might solve a few problems of the IDE bus.
That's it!

As for CD0 driver from AOS3.1 not recognizing your CDRom, it can happend because of incompatibilities with the Amiga IDE's port and the CDRom (again IDEFix will fix this), or simply it's set to a unit/device that doesn't correspond to your CDRom. Open CD0 in a text editor and edit the device and unit to match your CDRom. If this fails, get IDEFix (your need to configure it too, of course).

Ups, I see that you're using WinUAE to read the 3.9 CD. Never tried IDEFix with a PC but if CD0 from 3.1 floppies doesn't do the job you can get another CDRom filesystem from Aminet(like AmiCDFS) and try it out.

I just remembered that WinUAE uses it's own specific device for the IDE port so that might be why the CDRom isn't recognized. Can't remember the name but read the WinUAE docs, there's a tutorial on getting a CD recognized with it.

I think it should be easier if you got a CD/DVD working on your A3000, wich you probably want to do sooner or later anyway. That way the emergency disk you created also has a better chance to work.

Try this method:
1. Install OS 2.x on your Amiga
2. Download CD ROM driver from Aminet
ie. http://aminet.net/search?query=amicdrom
3. Copy it to a 720K PC disk on your PC and insert it into the Amiga (Crossdos supplied with OS2.1 should read it) or use a serial connection to copy it from PC to Amiga.
4. Install the CDROM drivers.
Copy contents of C folder to C:
   Copy cdrom-handler to L:
Copy Cd0 to devs:dosdrivers (or append to Mountlists)
5. Modify CD0 to match your IDE/SCSI device and unit
6. Mount cd0 using mount command.

- 3.1 will not recognise my SCSI CDROM drive
- There is no IDE bus on an Amiga 3000 and my CD-ROM drive is SCSI
- AOS3.1 won't even recognise an FFS formatted hard drive now other than the oe it boots from!

I am trying to install AOS3.9 on an Amiga 3000 but I do have access to a PC with WinUAE.

I don't know what cdrom-handler is or where to find it.

I may be wrong but I believed that if I copied the content of the CD onto another hard drive using the PC (which I did), I no longer needed the CD.

However, for reasons that are beyond my understanding, the 3000 will not recognise (mount?) any formatted hard drive other than the one it boots from.

Okay, I was able to untangle myself a bit...

To get the CDROM drive to be recognised, all I had to do was specify UNIT=4 in the icon information for CD0:

Now, I can read the CD.

From the CD I copied the missing L:Fastfilesystem and now, I can also see the hard disk.

I ran the installer and created the emergency disk. Yessssss!!

Now I can breathe a little.

Here comes the next interesting part. I have a Cybervision3D card I haven't installed yet.

How should I go about this?

Install the Cybervision first then OS3.9 or install OS3.9 first then the Cybervision?

First install OS3.9 under ecs/ocs next install the cybervision card using CGX (cybergraphics) version 4.

Glad you found a solution!

Don't want to complicate any of your endeavours but you could also use the Picasso96 software which also has a driver for the Cybervision 64/3D. You don't have to buy the CyberGraphics V4 cd for that.

Ups, sorry, I know A3000's have scsi but for some stupid reason was thinking all IDE when I posted that...:-)
But it was after all the unit on CD0 as we suggested, so, glad you found a solution.

I already purchased the CGX V4 CD but it seems Picasso96 has a wider support. Is picasso96 also a piece of software you have to buy?

I would use CGX 4 if I were you, I once used P96 with my CV64 and CV64/3D card but will never go back to P96 again  :-)

Don't forget this update when you after you've installed CGX4 in OS3.9 http://phase5.a1k.org/files/cgxv42_rc5.lha

P96 is or was donationware, think the P96 website is gone  :-(

Man this Amiga is turning in to a horror story.

For 15 minutes I had the workbench running on CV64/3D at 800x600 15 bit and I was on cloud 9.

Now I reboot the machine, the first thing I get no more signal from the CV3D and the standard Amiga display claims a software error.
====================
CVision3D
Program failed (error #80000004).
Wait for disk activity to finish.
====================

Now I power off the machine and then back on and all the CV display modes have VANISHED!!!

What the H377 ???

With 3.9 BB2 installation you have to use the latest CGX4 update, without it you lose your CGX screenmodes.

I have no clue what is BB2. The CGX 4 CD came with a floppy that said: Update disk - Run this disk first.

I ran the installation from this floppy and not from the CD. Since I bought the package only a month ago, I have no reason to believe it does not contain the latest update.

A little investigation reveals that the software (or hardware) of the CV3D may be incompatible with my Mercury accelerator. If I boot in 68030, I get no error message but the CV3D modes are unavailable. Booting in 68040 give the aforementioned error message.

Still, it feels like the CV3D is totally dead.
