Amiga 1000 Keyboard
« on: April 12, 2007, 03:39:15 AM »
Hi, i have had an Amiga 1000 which i got from an old bloke about 5 years ago, he purchased it in 1985 new and only ever turned it on once he said. Its brand new still in origional box and packaging. I have finally decided to get it up and running but do not have a keyboard with it. The conection seems to be an RJ11 or RJ12, i am wondering if there is anyone that knows of a web site or can provide me with a wiring diagram to turn a standard PS2 keyboard into one with the right conector. I will also look around to purchase an origional one but any help to get me going would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

:-)

It should be easy to adapt an Amiga keyboard from another model like an A2000 or A3000 with a simple cable adapter. You could figure this out from the pinouts of each, which are available on the net.

To connect a standard PS2 keyboard would require a hardware adapter as the signals are not compatible.

Finding an original A1000 keyboard in good condition for an affordable price seems to be harder that you might think.

Good Luck,
Jeff

Thanks, there is a keyboard for an A4000 on ebay at the moment, but the price is rising very fast 9 bids all ready 8 hours to go. And to think of all the old keyboards i remember thowing out years ago that would have done the job just fine, but were obsolete at the time...*sigh*

Just never know do you... :-)

You can also easily adapt an A500 keyboard although you would need a special housing for it.

A1000 keyboards are very rare, there are fewer keyboards than A1000s, cause back in the day Commodore gave big rebates on new A2000s in exchange for an A1000 keyboard. (I even have a keyboardless A1000 myself.)

Pinouts should be easy enough to find on the web, if not I can provide a few links.

In order to use a PS/2 (peecee) keyboard, you could use this hack. :rtfm:

To see the A1000 keyboard, try this.:-D

All Amiga keyboards pinouts are here.:-D

Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

why did Amiga want people to trade in just the A1000 keyboard?

I bought some keyboard adapters a while ago.
They let you use A2000/3000/4000* keyboards on A1000.

*needs ps/2 -> din converter

I guess I don't need all three of them, so let me know if you want one.

The A1000 keyboard pinouts are (looking at the cable with the clip on the bottom, going left to right): Gnd, KBData, KBClk, and +5V.  Easier and cheaper to get an old PC laptop than an A500 and use the following cable:

EDIT: link is bad.  Working link is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320104919302

it will simulate not only the A1000 keyboard, but the mouse and joystick as well and won't draw any power from the A1000.  The A500 keyboard uses a different way to reset than the A1000, A2000, A3000, and A4000.  The A500 keyboard connector has a separate reset signal.  Also, the pinouts given for the A500 in some documentations I have read have the pins incorrectly labelled.  I already went through a whole bunch of Amigas in experimenting to implement the software simulation of the keyboard (included in MPDOS).

If you want to modify a keyboard for the A1000, use the A2000 or A4000 one.

This was Commodore's way of having people trade in the 1000 for a 2000 without them having to deal with all the returned CPUs. I guess it would cost $$$ to ship them back from the dealers. They eventually wised up on later trade up plans and all you needed was a serial number.

Okay, I listed an Amiga 1000 keyboard on Ebay if anyone is looking for one and I'm throwing in simulated version of keyboard/mouse/joystick for small amount if you win the auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:11&item=320113629939

If you just want the simulated one (which also works with most other amigas):
