Total Amiga newbie looking to learn more

Hello out there, I'm new here. I've been fooling around with computers of various OS'es and platforms for quite a while, but I've never owned an Amiga. After fooling around with a few emulators, I think I'd like to make the jump and buy a real piece of hardware, for the purpose of some gaming and possibly some music editing.

I guess I'll ask right off the bat, what would be a good Amiga box to start with? I've been looking at 1200's because they seem pretty cheap and plentiful, but if there's a better option, let me know.

Welcome!

An entry level A1200 is an excellent place to start as it is relatively cheap, but very very expandable should you decide to increase the power of your Amiga.

Howsit!

Yep, get the A1200. That's the ideal starting Amiga.
You can get an accelerator card afterwards. If you are just messing around with Amigas, an 030 with 8mb of RAM will do just fine.

I agree with the previous speakers, the A1200 ist the best Amiga to get in touch with the Amigavirus. ;) I also recommend a small 2.5 Laptopharddisk with 4GB, a Ram Expansion (cheap), or better a Turbocard like the Blizzard 1230 IV or a GVP 1230 Jaws II.

Thanks! I was originally looking for a 1200 but I've found a complete Amiga 500 system for sale locally, apparently works and comes with "tons of accessories"...I can probably get it for $20. Is this a pretty good deal?

Hi,

If it comes with Kickstart/Workbench 2.x or 3.x, and perhaps a hard drive and some extra memory, go for it!

Otherwise, if it's a standard 1.3-based Amiga with maybe a half meg upgrade and a single floppy drive, you probably won't want to do much with it other than play old games.

In any case, I'd have said $20 was a good enough deal, especially as you won't have to worry about postage or eBay...
