PSU hack for desktop A1200 anyone????
« on: March 01, 2007, 07:56:30 AM »
Any ideas on how and if i could hack a laptop psu for a desktop 1200 with 1230, hd, slimline cd rom fitted in it? My aim is to
a)power up the standard desktop with all that extra stuff it carries
b)minimize the space that occupies in my office
c)and surely make it more easy to transfer

Anyone that has fitted rechargable laptop batteries in their miggies. I know it all has to do with voltage etc. and it's a bit crazy but the only place i dare to ask is here.

Every laptop PSU I have ever seen outputs in only a single voltage. For example my laptop PSU outputs at 19V 4.7A.
The A1200 requires +12v, -12v, +5v and ground.  This means you would have to build some extra ciruit to step down the initial 19V and create the three different voltages required.  (I have no idea how to design that sort of stuff, but I could probably build one from somebody else's design).  :-)
In short, it's not just a case of attaching the A1200 power connector to the Laptop PSU, theres more involved than that.

What about this?

http://www.mini-box.com/picoPSU-60-WI?sc=8&category=13

NEW!  PicoPSU-60-WI 6-26V DC-DC ATX power supply
- Tiniest DC-DC ATX PSU
- 60 watts / 80 watt peak
- 6-26V wide input
- 100% silent, fanless
- Over 94% efficiency
- Plugs directly into the ATX connector
- Compatible with VIA C3/C7 or Intel / AMD CPU with V(core) from 5V rail
- manufactured by mini-box.com
- ROHS compliant version
- Excellent mini-ITX PSU

Then you might use a ATX to A1200 adapter on that.

Yep with some adaptation that might do the trick, but it probably wouldn't be any more powerfull than the A500 Brick, which is also 60Watt!

Easiest and cheapest thing to do is use your connector and cabling from your original Amiga's PSU and hook it up to an old AT PSU.  Most AT PSU's can be had for little or no money at all.  200W max is all you need for an A1200 desktop.  Going down the ATX route is simply a waste of time, effort and money.

I'm currently building an A1200 project.  It's PSU is an ATX.  It was just as easy if not easier than an AT.
To switch it on and off I just put a small chrome toggle switch between the green wire and earth (black wire next to the green one) on the ATX PSU's power connector.  Works fine.  :-)

Well if 60 watts is too little then what about 120.

http://www.mini-box.com/PicoPSU-120-WI-25-12-25V-DC-DC-ATX-power-supply?sc=8&category=13

The original question was how to use a single DC laptop power supply on an Amiga 1200.  This a DC-DC ATX power supply that you can run with a 19 volt or so laptop power supply.  This also requires that you get the ATX to 1200 power supply adapter or so.

I've been thinking about this kind of thing lately. I have a 90W 12V DC brick and a DC-DC ATX PSU (very dinky).
Since the PC it used to power no longer needs it I'd love to run an Amiga from it but I suspect I'd only need 1 floppy lead and half a dozen pins from the ATX connector. If only I knew how to hack it.

Anyone else done this? Anything to watch out for? Do ATX PSUs get angry if you only use a few of their power lines?! I'd hate to burn out a pricey PSU and an Amiga.

I had some how lost my original Psu for my A1200 so I used the Floppy power cable to power it from an AT psu...

no idea if its bad to power the A1200 from the Floppy power port.. but seems to work.. :)

(I made it so that it has a Molex plug sticking out the back for connecting to the psu :)

It doesn't work. -12V is missing.

This will power the motherboard but your sound will be distorted/choppy due to the lack of -12v

The molex only carry +12v, +5v and GND
