PFS2/3 Install Problem
« on: November 19, 2002, 01:57:26 AM »
Hello.  I recently bought PFS3 full version (it's actually a PFS2 CD-ROM full version with PFS3 full version upgrade on floppy diskette) from Software Hut in Pennsilvania, USA.

However, I have a problem with the PFS2 CD-ROM that I bought.  When I run the installer program, it asks for a CD key number and says that it is on the back of the case.  Unfortunately, there is no CD key number anywhere on or in the case for the disc.  I cannot install the software without this CD key number.

I also tried installing straight from the PFS3 upgrade floppy diskette without installing PFS2 from CD-ROM first.  That also does not work because it also asks for the CD key.

In both cases, I tried entering the number that is on the upgrade floppy diskette, but that does not work. The install fails saying that the file it is trying to operate on is the wrong version.

Could any of you please provide some assistance???
Michael

Erh.....sounds a bit dodgy!  :-o

If I were you I'd contact the reseller or the authors to find out a bit more.

Dodgy? How?  I've seen and purchased software sold like that before.  In any case, I have already sent Emails to the reseller and the authors/makers of PFS.  I figured I would ask here, too, just in case there's a quicker way to handle things.

Well....dodgy in the way that there's no reg.nr.! Or perhaps a sticker has fallen of the jewel case?

All of the packaging looks legit.  I figure the sticker must have fallen off.  If it was on the celophane wrapping that I threw away, that's a damn stupid place to put it.  Though I didn't see a sticker on that either.

SilvrDrgn:

I almost threw mine away too, it is indeed on
the cellophane!

Since you bought it, and I also bought it,
I don't think there is any problem with me
passing you the keyfile, so if you can't get
it from the reseller you can email me at:

d_roas@hotmail.com

Or leave me your mail.

I just got it a few weeks ago, and it works
really well. Everything is noticeably faster...
One file that took several minutes to unarc with
FFS took less than a minute under PFS. The system
even boots much faster.

CRAP!!  The cellophane was in the garbage, and the garbage collection at my house was just picked up yesterday.  What a dumb place to put the number!!! Especially when there is another sticker that's pasted directly on the CD-ROM case that says the PFS 3 full version diskette is inside!  Why couldn't they put both stickers directly on the case?!?!  GGGRRR!!!

I have already contacted Softare Hut (where I bought it from) and the Email address listed on the back of the CD-ROM case insert.  Hopefully, one of them will respond with help.  If not, I'll probably be contacting you.

Since the installer script uses the "getserial" command, I assume it's getting it from somewhere on the CD-ROM to validate what I type into the requester during install.  If that's the case, wouldn't different numbers be used on each disc.  If so, then your serial might not work with my disc.

Just have to wait and see.  Thanks for the offer!

No problem at all! I also have an extra copy of the PFS2 cd that I don't need because I have PFS3 on cd, so if worse comes to worse please consider it yours.

Software Hut has graciously provided me with another registration code at no charge.  They responded to my Email tonight.  Now I'm busy making backups of my partitions so I can convert them to PFS3 and reload them.  Hoping for a noticeable performance boost.
