Installing os3.9 to Compactflash on cd32 "No disk present"
« on: December 01, 2006, 05:55:49 PM »
Hey..

I've finally gotten my cf-adapters and cf-cards, installed an adapter and a card in my cd32 ide-slot.

When booting up from workbench 3.1 disk and entering hdtoolbox, it finds a drive at "scsi 2nd. 0". I enter the "new definition" and "read configuration". I get a message that the disk is "not a disk drive (type 7)", but i can proceed. The partition is set to bootable, sfs/ffs etc.
I boot up and notice that the drive dh0: is listed in the early startup, and that it's enabled. Booting up from workbench 3.1 disk again and now i want to format the partition. I try first from cli, writing "info" i find the dh0: listed, but it says it's "No disk present".
When trying to format with "format Drive dh0: name dho"
it says something like "not a disk" or similar (can't remember). When i try to format it from hdsetup it says "can't format your drive" or something like that.

anyone got any idea? seems like it can't use the cf-card?
i've installed 3.9 on a hdd in the same ide-slot so that's ok. it's a 2gb samsung (or so the ebay seller said, seems like a fake) cf-card. the cf-adapter is set to master with the jumper.

err...?

Have you got an SX1 for your CD32?

The CD32 dosen't have an IDE slot as far as I recall.  Some kind of proprietry interface (niether SCSI or IDE) that took a raw mechanisim for the CD Hardware.

I had similar problem when installing OS on CF in my A1200. You have to do a trick when setting up partitions. Go to advanced and uncheck FFS, Directory Cache and International mode. This has to be done only in partition manager. When you are formating drive you can use FFS, DC and IM.

There is a patch-set for hdtoolboxes on the Aminet:

http://aminet.net/search.php?query=hdtoolbox

If I remember right, it requires some other software (program) that applies the patches to the HDToolbox files.

After that you don't see the disk is not type 7 announcement, and things should go as with hard disks normally.

Also, it might prevent some problems, if you set the MaxTransfer to 7E00, so the CF card will not get too large tranfer requests at once from the scsi.device ide-driver.
AFAIK some IDE devices misinterpret the sector count value, if it is not "modest" enough.

thanks a lot!

I thought i was totally lost here, will try unchecking in partition manager first, then if that doesn't work i'll patch hdtoolbox (though i don't have communication between pc and amiga yet, so i'll have to wait for my parallel-cable to arive..
I'll post results.

EDIT:

Ok, removing FFS, DC and IM did not work, but I might have not done it correct I guess..(I entered hdtoolbox, and into partition manager, unchecking the three and save changes, booting and entering cli, same problem; says disk not present, and formatting is not possible.

How do I apply that hdtoolbox patch? I'm a bit green on that area, can i just put hdtoolbox in ramdisk and patch it there? or do i have to  put it on a floppy and patch it there? how do i patch?
