Just got a GP2X-F100 for my Birthday
« on: November 17, 2006, 02:21:11 AM »
Hi All,
Well I got a nice little surprise when I came home today. Apparently my younger Sister (aka the favorite one  :-)) ordered me a GP2X from Play-Asia.com for my birthday  :-D
I haven't had much of a chance to play with it yet (No SD card to spare  :-() but I can't wait to download UAE and some other emulators and give it a go  :-)

One concern though, I'm not sure if this is the MK2 unit or the original MK1  :-?  On the box there's a little sticker that says MK2 but when I looked at the system info it just says GP2X-F100 (on the back it says F100(B)).  Is there any way to tell for sure what model I have?

Edit: I notice that the direction nob has a little bump in the middle, is this a bad sign :-?

It will most likely be a mkII. If it has the flat joystick button and the sticker on the back has korean writing on it then it definately is a mkII.

The mkII has a different screen which shouldnt have scanlines like the mkI but also loses some of the crispness of the mkI screen, also the mkII screen has weird brightness/contrast issues if not viewed from a perfect angle, whereas the mkI screen looks the same from nearly any angle.

MkIIs also dont overclock as high as mkIs on average but you may get lucky, my mkI overclocks to 279mHz fine but 280mHz makes it crash.

The joystick mechanism in the mkII was rotated 45 degrees before being soldered on giving it greater accuracy and less bias to the diagonals. And a revised version of the cap was fitted and I believe the joystick shaft was also shortened.

So there you go, the differences between the two... either way prepare to have fun. :)

edit: forgot about this one.. The mkII does not need an extra power supply for the breakout box as it supplies the breakout box with power from the gp2x unit itself. A mkI with a breakout box neds two power supplies, one for the breakout box and one for the unit itself.

It sounds certainly like a MKII to me, but you will definately be able to tell by the lack of scanlines.

I haven't tested exactly how high mine can overclock, but it can do 266MHz no problems.

AFAIK, there's also been another model after the standard MKII that puts out 5V on the EXT port instead of 3.3V.

Cool thanks for all the info  :-)

Edit: Okay new issue, I can not seem to connect the unit to my PC :-?  Strangely only two of the eight USB ports on my computer see the GP2X when it is connected and even then they report that the device is "malfunctioning"

I did some digging online and it seems that this problem was common for GP2X prior to 2.00 but according to my system I'm using 2.00  :-? I'm going to try replacing the USB cable tomorrow and see if that helps.

You have a MkII.  Same as mine.  Btw, mine overclocks to 280, stable, but hangs at 290.

The USB problem is pretty common, try looking around; http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi
http://www.emuboards.com/invision/index.php?showtopic=25076

for the low down on this problem.

Ive found the easiest way to get stuff onto the GP2X is to use a SD reader on the PC instead of the supplied USB cable, readers are dirt cheap and you dont need the GP2X switched on while moving big files.

Amiga emulation is still patchy, some things run fine with the GP2X at ~250Mhz, some things are very glitchy, but its early days yet.  And there's something magical about seeing the WB1.3 boot screen on a handheld!

I'm really impressed with the GP2X, the number of free apps and the quality of the machine and the software is surprising.

The potential for exploration and tweakage is unlimited.

@coldfish
Thanks for the advice  :-)
I'll try and pick up an SD card reader this afternoon (and heck maybe even a new 2GB card).

I'll have to look more into over clocking as it's been mentioned several times (in this and other threads) now but I honestly have no clue how to do it

Most emulators will have an inbuilt overclock function accessed through a menu.

If you want to try some polished emulators I can recommend gngeo the neo geo emulater, mame and picodrive the megadrive emulator.

The new version of uae4all is very nice also.
