I'm thinking of resurrecting my Amiga after a few years of moving it around with me. Doing it mainly because I've been looking into VR systems, and the prices for hardware are crazzzzzy. I have a 2500 with a Mandala board and software...by the Vivid Group. I'm not sure if I even remember how to use the thing anymore, we'll see. It's v-e-r-y nice to know there are all these Amiga-ites out there!

Oh, I don't use these boards that often...so apologies for any incorrect posting.

Hello nota1,

I have a book called "Garage Virtual Reality" that I picked up from an ACM meeting on campus.  It was written before Commodore went belly-up so it mentions Amiga extensively.  If you're interested and are from the US, I'd gladly let you have the book.  If you're not from around here I'd still let you have the book if you want to pay the customs and shipping.

Anyway, welcome to Amiga.org and I hope you have fun with your Amiga.

I remember back in the early 90's when (if you read the gaming press at all)  'Virtual Reality' was all set to be the next big thing.

Atari made that headset for the Jaguar, and Nintendo gave us the Virtual Boy, and the local arcades had those VR arcade cabinets...  there were even people selling ridiculously expensive VR headsets that plugged into your PC so you could play Doom and Magic Carpet on it.  And Lawnmower Man came out in the cinema, billed as the 'first virtual reality movie'.

And then the novelty wore off and it dawned on people that consumer VR was actually overhyped rubbish and that nobody wanted to pay hundreds of dollars to wear some ridiculous HMD and bulky gloves just to play a game at 7 fps and get motion sickness.  Atari died without their VR headset ever seeing the light of day, Virtual Boy became Nintendo's first ever flop, and the VR games disappeared from the arcades.

I think 'VR' still sees some use in medical and military simulation though.

I'm in nearby WI, but I'm thinking I might have that book. Why might I not know if I have the book? I've moved around a bit in the last 3 years, and somethings -books, have been packed that long for sure. Of course the Amiga has been packed for a bit longer than that. There was a time when I was entertaining at least getting rid of my Amiga books, but...providing my cpu is still running, I'm sure I'll be happy I didn't. The Amiga was MY first computer (the household had a Tandy) back when I was in grad school. It kicked butt then for sure...

I also have one of those Atari gloves -that I was always going to hack but never did...

Tron (VR) ...still a cool movie!
