As for expanding my Amiga, until I get a Zorro backplane, there is not much I can add to my A1200 Tower.

Getting a Zorro backplane for an A1200 is probably (again? :-)) the wrong upgrade for you IMHO.

A1200 Zorro backplanes are only Zorro II and they dont support DMA and only a small few have video slots + chipset adapters. This drastically limits what cards you can use.

My advice would be to get a PCI backplane. A GRex if you have a Blizzard 1260/PPC or Mediator otherwise.

This will give you access to all the cards you'll want (Graphics, Sound, Networking, USB).

I would still recommend a faster accelerator, more RAM, bigger hard drive (Using SFS) or a PCMCIA network card over a bus board. They will all be better for you in terms of value for money, and impact on your Amiga experience.

Depends on if he wants to play 3D games or not. If he only wants to play the oldies, surf the internet and have a better looking Workbench, there is no need to go and spend a lot of money on equipment; the Zorro busboard will be just fine for a CV64/3D for Workbench usage.

Pretty much off topic anyway.

At the end, the Zorro solution (Z2/Z3 bus : 40/60$, CV64/3D 80/150$, pcmcia adapter + NEtwork : 50/80$ or Xsurf : 80$) and PCi solutions are closed to the same price with better specs...(Voodoo 3 :20$, SB128/EssSolo1 : 15/20$, Pci Net10Mbps : 10/20$, TV card : 15/30$, bus : GREX (only bppc rev2) : 80/120$, mediator : 100/200$)
Keep the Faith !
VG 5000/A1000/500/500+/600/2000/CDTV/1200PPC-GREX/1200PPC -ATEO-BV/4060D/CD32/Aone/Peg 1/Peg2 G4/ various funny machines too  :-) http://www.mo5.com/collection/index.php?pseudo=CLS2086

@CLS2086: No need to send me one, I have exactly one DVD player that plays all I need it to. (A CyberHome, AKA Panasonic that does VCD, MP3, auto PAL/NTSC+conversion, etc.) It's just that if wanted another unit, I would have to hunt online for it.... Just a note, J&R music world is a large retailer here in the US, yet out of  about 30 DVD players, only 4 play VCD....

@alexh: duh, my brain stopped working again, I meant a PCI backplane, not Zorro (But I would Soo like a PAR card) My amiga is decent spec. right now, though I do want to find 128MB SIMMS thin enough for my '060, and SCSI module.... :-D

I though Alien Breed Tower Assault also used the FMW cartridge for its intro and outro movies, but maybe those can be seen even without the cartridge (I haven't tried the CD32 version of the game, so I don't know)?
Amiga 1200, Mirage Tower, PC-Key 1200, Blizzard 1260/50, SCSI Kit, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD, Mediator SX, Soundblaster 128, Voodoo 3 and Realtek 8139.

Only 4 are listed as playing VCD.  Because nobody in the US cares about VCD, they don't advertise it.  I'd guess that most others play VCD.  I haven't had a problem with VCD on any DVD player I've had over the years (SVCD is another story).
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

there are quite a few dvd players that can play vcd and svcd here in the states. i have a cheapo apex ad-1500 that plays them very well.
vcds are roughly vhs quality mpeg 1 video
svcd are dvd quality mpeg2 video with almost the playing time of the little dvd discs (which noone uses)

btw most if not all apex dvd players are vcd/svcd capable but their remotes suck at least the ad-1500 and 2500 do
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,
and its read only!
(my best geek putdown)
