Data CD/DVD cataloging software for Win/PC?
« on: May 12, 2006, 10:36:59 PM »
Any recomendations for cataloging all my data CDs & DVDs? I'm getting a carousel storage unit and the software that comes with it has a lousy search engine - only searches on disc title, not contents. So I need something that searches on contents, maybe even inside zip and rar files. I've downloaded the trial version of Advanced File Organizer and it seems to do the job, but I want to get some other recommendations before I send in the shareware fee.

Thanks,
Pete

If you have Microsoft Excel, Access, or some kind of database program, you could enter as much entries, then later on create searches on it....

Or maybe that is what is trying to be avoided?  :-D

Just my recommendation.

Hey kd,

I thought about Excel and actually started to build something but then realised that the contents part of the database is beyond my current skill level. And my experience with Access is minimal.

I changed the topic title to not use the word 'database', but 'cataloging' instead.

So, in short, yeah I want to avoid doing it myself.  :-D

Thanks Jasper, I'll try that one out - it looks similar but has less restriction on pre-payment use.

I do use a program called CDBank.

You just insert the CD/DVD disc in the drive, and tell the program to add that disc to the database.

And after that, you can search the contents of all the discs in the database.

It's easy to use, have a clean interface, and it's fast.

You can create groups too, to organize your discs.

For me it do the job.

Mugo,
I tried CDBank but I decided to go with WhereIsIt - it has more features that make the extra $20 worth it for the way I will use the program.

Thanks to all who replied,

Hi there! :-D
Good thread!
I has accumulated plenty of CD and DVD discs, please help me to choose the simple and suitable CD cataloger.
Not need too much options such as reading inside archives, save picture thumbnails, and other. Need just fine cataloger with no errors messages.
While stopped on these:
Smart CD Catalog Lite (www.smartcdcatalog.com)
CD Catalog (www.zero2000.com)
What choose, can there is something else?
TY!

PS: Tried WhereIsIt, think it is uncomfortable and tangled for me.
