Isn't this too much?
« on: April 28, 2006, 11:16:14 AM »
I noticed there are new PNG icon archives on AmiNet. I like PNG icons very much so I tried them. However I was quite surprised by this one:

Moreover, the archive is named AMF-Enemies.lha
What enemies??? Isn't this disgusting? Even as a joke...

Personally I don't find it that offensive. I guess it continues the trend set by pictures such as this  bill gates pic manipulation.

Printouts of this picture was plastered all over the CS department of university of jyväskylä in the 90s. No-one was offended, really, or at least no-one was offended enough to demand taking the pictures down. It was seen as humorous.

It might vary depending on the family history/background of the person looking at the picture. But, does it mean that touchy subjects should be banned in humour altogether? That's a tougher question.

If you want to get the pictures removed, I am sure you can just ask Aminet adminstrators and they will comply (who wouldn't want to be politically correct, esp if you're running something on charity). Next we will remove all Microsoft critisism, or any aminet software that is anti-christian?

Just bringing up some points here, this is not as black and white as it might seem (and obviously I am not backing any SS or Nazi actions here, that should be pretty obvious).

Based on your avatar which shows a program that depends on Windows, I can see that you don't have the disease too many Amigans have of hating Microsoft.  I must admit that I am not totally innocent of that prejudice and dislike MS greatly due to their past business practices that hurt the entire computing innovation world, IMHO, and the fact that their software is so bloated, inefficient and over priced, again IMHO.  But I think complaining about MS and using bandwidth bashing it is a waste of my time and yours to read it.  If I could eliminate all use of MS products, I would in a heart beat, but computers are tools to serve certain purposes and I will use what ever makes my life easier and better, even if it means sometimes using MS crap.  I am working further and further toward to reducing my MS dependence each year.  Go Amiga, go Mac, go Linux.  I look forward to the day when MS is just one of many companies that has to work hard to earn customers with quality products, and not because they have such a monopoly on the OS installs worldwide.

I am not disgusted by the icon, I just don't care to get involved in wasting time bashing MS or any other company.  Life is too short to waste my time and effort on such things.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Microsoft is a saint compared with IBM, if it was an IBM logo it could be construde as factually correct ;)

I dislike microsofts anti competition attitude, but i use their operating system as it offers a usuable and friendly way of accessing my computer, it seems that windows XP has borrowed alot from AmigaOS in my opinion. Linux is just too complex for a home user PC so until AmigaOS x86 or aros comes of age i will use WINxp.

Also it should not be forgotten that Bill Gates is a big time donor to charities, and thus doesnt deserve such hate.

@nadoom

Historically perhaps, but these days IBM is saint compared to beasts like Microsoft or SCO (*spit*).

However, funnily FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) was defined by ex-IBM guy who coined the acronym to descibe the actions of the IBM salespersons... :-)

I agree with you Piru, except one thing:

It might vary depending on the family history/background of the person looking at the picture.

I don't think that you have to have personal or family experience in order to have a right to be disgusted by this. You cannot reject only those evils that you have experienced personally. The experience of other people or whole mankind is enough for me.

well, this is not about microsoft. It's about the person who came up with the association like that. Generally, considering someone as an enemy isn't very positive thinking. What's good on "hating" feelings, where it brings your mind? You're right, life is too short to waste my time and effort on such things. Peace.

Oh come on man... you needn't demonize everything...
Dammit a lot of people have been conditioned to freak out at just the slightest things...
Take a look around at what's going on all over the world... there's a LOT of things that should worry you... not an icon from Aminet.

Yeap well so if you don't like the icons don't install them :) Someone might like them and use them - and he is surely free to do so.

I'm not disgusted by it and I'll go so far as to say that I support it 100% and even, if you please, will donate my entire collection of internal organs to the regime that makes it possible.

Sheesh.
