the 2.5" cable for the A1200
« on: April 22, 2006, 04:46:48 PM »
with the a1200 i acquired there was a hdd - as expected. now, that is connected via an IDE cable (i measured it to be 5CM long - so i dont understand the 2.5" thing lol)

now, if i wanted to also run a cd-drive: i would need a cable with two ways. the question is: how can yuo neatly do this? i have the top of my a1200 as i needed to but how can you get the cable to the outside of the amiga with the top on?

1 - why it is called 2.5"?

2 - CDROM and HDD on a two headed IDE 2.5" cable - ok?

3 - how to neaten things up without leaving the lid off?

thanks guys!

The 2.5" refers to the size of the hard drive not the length of the cable (as opposed to normal 'desktop' hard drives which are 3.5" and fit in a 3.5" bay.

Yes you can have two devices hooked up to the internal IDE - a hard drive set to master and a CDROM as slave - I had this setup working fine for some years.

Theere is a blanking plate at the rear of the A1200 on the left side as you look at it from the back, next to the mouse ports so you can run the IDE cable through there assuming it's long enough.  You'll need a cable with 2 x 2.5" connectors (motherboard and internal HD) and one 3.5" connector (you may have to make one yourself).  You'll need an external Power Supply for the CDROM drive too.

Best to use a A1200 buffered IDE adapter to connect the CD and HD

@amije

The adaptor you are refering to as "that" can not be connected to the internal IDE controller of the A1200. The TV modulator is in the way.

@doctorq
IDEADA001 is not meant to connect direct to the IDE header on the A1200- it connects to the back of the 2.5" hard disk and then it can be connected to any 3.5" IDE interface.  So it's great for using an A1200 hard disk in an A4000 for example.

@amije
I have read the product description for IDEADA001 and cannot see what the confusion is here?!

@amigakit

I know. If I didn't know the adaptor, how could I say it wouldn't fit? I just stated that the adaptor couldn't be installed on the A600 or A1200 motherboard.

Anyway, that particular adaptor is a bit overpriced if you ask me.

the image above shows: two memory sticks both 4mb each. also, it shows a small piece of hardware with an IDE port, and a POWER port (just as if it were a CD-ROM/HDD for a PC)

1 - what is the IDE/POWER hardware used for

2 - what do i need to attach those memory modules?

this ide thing is exactly the one that can't fit at a1200 motherboard ide port so it's useless. for the rams you need a ram expansion board or an accelarator, something like this:
amigakit accelarators

-edit-
elbox ram expansion (not recomanded at this price...)

APOLLO 1240 ACCELERATOR W/32MB RAM
product code: AMIACC013

hmm, so this is the cheapest here for the a1200. now, this will upgrade from my current '20 to a '40 in terms of proc.

also, it will increase memory to an extra 32Mb? (in that case, what do i do wit the 2*4 mbs?)

i think you can order it without the extra ram if you want it this way, but the extra ram by it's self it's not so expensive and worth (for me) to have it. more than this, (for me again...) it's better a blizz030 accelarator or a blizz060.
you can search at ebay too and at least for blizz030 search for the mk4 version.

well, see i could never ever afford that hardware is all.

i do want memory expansion mainly because a few AGA games require 2+Mb. i am not a heavy graphic designer on the A for instance.

i would get an Accellerator if it were cheaper.

might just seatch on eBay
