Adding SCSI to Blizzzard PPC
« on: January 26, 2006, 12:37:51 AM »
Has anyone actually done this?

I got hold of an EISA card with NCR 53c710 controller chip, and can get it de-soldered fairly easily.  I have a dead BPPC603e+ with the required SMD components on it and the SCSI connector header.
There are a couple of resistors which are hard to attach partly under one of the SIMM sockets, but i figure I could do that with conductive glue if needed (or remove a corner of the simm socket).

Aside form that I think I can sodler the components in place.

The thing is firmware - I know the flashrom has the scsi drivers, but is there any other firware on board (aside form the serial number) which tells the board whether it is scsi capable or not, or is it just a case of adding the components?

Anyone know of anyone who has actually done this (or failed trying)?

Don't know if it's possible, but Amiga Repair Center in France said they can't do it.

IIRC, the reason why it can't be done is due to the following:

It's hard to solder the SCSI chip (however not impossible).
The flash chip on the card for some reason cannot be flashed with SCSI compatible firmware, but an entirely new chip with SCSI compatible firmware already flashed on it must be soldered onto the board (e.g. remove the old one and place the new one).
Other various chips and the SCSI header must be soldered onto the board.

Anyways, all as per Amiga Repair Center, so it's valid info. :-)

Sounds like a lot of work. Probably the easiest thing to do would be do get a dead BPPC with SCSI and use the parts on the good, non SCSI PPC card.

@x56h34

Hmmm, will have to compare chip numbers on my bppcs - which one is the flash chip anyhow?

think I'll get in touch with amiga repair centre, see what they can tell me.

Thanks

When I asked Jean at Amiga Repair Center France he said he could surely change over the chips no problem.  But he cautioned that he could not guarantee that it would even work at all even after all that.  You may want to get first a total price for the conversion from him. It's not going to be cheap. With no guarantee that it would even work, I abandoned the notion.
