Advice for an A500 needed
« on: January 18, 2006, 05:25:02 PM »
Hi guys,
I really got the itch again for playing Jeff Minter's games and watching demos
Problem is my 1084S died like five years ago :(
I plan on buying a scartlead on ebay but I want to know a few things!
I got my own A500 (which I bought second hand in 1998) . Inside there is a kickstart v2.04 on an very big cart wich is connect to the processor and the socket where the rom would normally be. Does this little board adds anything to the A500 besides OS2?
There is also a board on top of gary called the Eureka 4MB Gary. But in the trapdoor there is a regular gerenic 512KB + battery upgrade the Eureka is connected to the 512KB card and to a switch on the side of the Amiga. What's the function of all this?

A couple of years ago I got an unexpanded A500+ free from someone (the warranty seals where still closed!) Today I peeked inside and it looked liked the battery leaked a bit . Nothing to bad I cleaned it off with a bit of alcohol on a cotton. But I guess the battery is dead. Can I use the battery from the trapdoor slot from my first miggy? And can I still use that 512KB in this A500+ or would I also have to install the Eureka chip.I want to use the 500+ instead of the 500 since it has 1MB of CHIP RAM

Can I still get a hold of a Viper 520 CD upgrade card? they looked so cool!

Last question:The batteries seem fairly stuck How can I get them out,any online guide on how to to that??

Thanks in advance

i only can tell you that if the battery is a small barell thing of 3,3 volt you can find easy a replacement for less that 2 euros so don't get it off, of the other a500
A3040/25 AmigaOS 3.9
A1260BPPC AmigaOS 3.9/4.0
Sam440ep AmigaOS 4.1.2
PegasosII/G3 AmigaOS 4.1.2/MorphOS 2.7/Debian 5.0.7/SUSE 11.1
MacMini/G4 1.5 MorphOS 2.7/OSX 10.5.8
Long Live Amiga

If i am going to have bugs on my system,
at least let me keep the latest versions.

You should remove the battery completly, as it will leak more even if it is dead. Also make sure it is 100% clean, or the acid will ruin your Amiga. You probably can use the battery of that other miggy, but it is not advisable, since that one will most likely leak as well and i would rather see you removing the one in the trapdoor slot as well, as it will ruin the memory expansion if it starts leaking.

The battery has absolutely zero function other than keeping the clock up2date while the amiga is powered off.
If you really need the clock, then i suggest you buy a brand new battery and make sure that you replace it after a few years.
