Believe this: A guy just gave me an original boxed Frontier Elite 2 when he was clearing out old amiga stuff.

I am not sure how much FE2 goes for on ebay, but it cant be cheap.
Hopelessly addicted to the world\'s best strategy game.

I got about five quid for mine.

Truly, 'twas the most addictive game I ever played. Often the sun was coming up before I realised I'd been hawking goods all over the galaxy for 10 hours straight!  Happy days :)

Hmmm. I just saw the demo of the intro off Aminet Set 3. Not bad for such a small number of colors. Very theatrical.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

yes, especially if you consider the fact that the game has become shareware and you can download the adf's at eliteclub website (and pay $5 registration fee in a month. and you can also manuals and stuff from fan sites). Owning the original is of course preferable though.

By the way, is it just me or the combat is annoyingly often in the game ? Even though I travel in highly developed federal systems (which are supposed to be safe) and I have almost nothing to attack for, I always get attacked two or three times until I get to a station. And also I noticed that you're more likely to be attacked when you switch to faster time. It seems like if you fasten the time slowly, (step by step) you get less encounters, which dead boring and annoying.

Weird, I seem to be having the opposite problem now. "Borrowed" the save file from the Frontierverse website, that gives you a tricked out Eagle Class fighter, (class 7 hyperdrive!!) but the problem is the pilot is already at Elite level, so I NEVER get attacked! I tried going to lawless places like Riedquat, noone will come near me!

Man, I need that ship!

Frontier is one of my favourite games and is well and truly overdue for a 21st century rewrite IMHO.  I still come back to play it 12 years on from release.

There are a few irritating little things though, while the in-game physics engine is realistic, combat is akin to duelling with someone on the end of a bungee rope.  The first thing I'd change would be to bring back the original Elite's combat AI, which seems to have taken several steps backward in Frontier.

Seeing "Haha!" as a response to "Surrender or Die" when you decide you're bored with the Gecko which attacks your Panther clipper begins to grate too.  Oh and while I'm at it, why do smaller ships queue up to attack you one at a time?  The original Elite was far more exciting in this respect.

It has been reborn into the 'X' franchise on the PC.  I think they just released X3...  It really is Elite!

I truely loved that game, i remember going into school and discussing how each of my friends had progressed with the game overnight lol.

it ran so well on my 68040/40

Its a shame that first encounters never came out on he amiga , i contacted Frontier developments and they said that it was never completed, anyway.

Apparently Elite 4 is in the works now i cant wait for that!

For the tricked out Eagle fighter, go to

http://www.sharoma.com/frontierverse/files.htm

Top left list theres "saves", click that and look for the "HEAGLE" file. Save it to your HD and load it as a saved game, hey presto, one Eagle long range fighter with Tardis like cargo hold.

Oh, and I forgot all about Pirates! Great game, really lost a lot of time playing that. The newest pc version is excellant, retained all the charm of the original with some nice new features and lovely graphics too!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I tried the X series of games, X2 was ok, but X3 is really poor. Unless you have a ninja pc you aint got a chance, it lags like hell! Too complicated, no tutorial whatsoever. Ok, so maybe I am not the most patient type, but a little help would not go amiss!

My favorite craft was the Boa freighter, its big enough to carry lots of slaves, battle weapons and open mechandise, and had a decent range. I also like the Imperial courier because it  looked good.
