50ns 32MB SIMMs.... where to find them?
« on: December 09, 2005, 06:53:24 PM »
After overclocking my CS-PPC just a bit more (PPC@224 MHz, 060@64 MHz, the entire CS-PPC is running off a single 64 MHz oscillator) I'd like to get some new RAM, preferably 50ns SIMMs. Does anyone know where they can be bought for a reasonable amount of money?

Failing that, I'd go for some slim/low profile 60ns ones,
so any info about where these can be found is also appreciated.

They need to be slim in order to allow some more air to flow across the ram controller chips (I'll be installing some vertical SIMM sockets soon, so that I can stick some heatsinks on the 4 chips between the top and 2nd SIMM socket).

Very rare- the only 50ns SIMM that I have come across, I put in my BlizzardPPC

However, 64MB slimline 60ns SIMMs are now in stock again.

the only suggestion i have is:

EDO 32MB only double side (thin/small 1 side one, are recognized as 16MB each)

about the 50ns don't know if you can find it. (i have here a couple of 32MB EDO 2 chips 50ns, recognized as 16MB each)

For the FPM 32MB 1 side, don't know if they are recognized correctly. Anyone?

@ Framiga

All the FPM ones I have tried that are single sided have either been recognised as 16mb or have crashed the system. This applies to use on Cyberstorm MKII, DKB3128 and the CyberstormPPC.
I think I drove AmigaKit crazy while I tried to find some that worked. I tried sources on-line and even bought some SIMMS off eBay, but no single-sided 32mb SIMM has ever worked on any of my cards (not as 32mb anyway).

Any single sided 32 MB SIMM will AFAIK be "half" a 64 MB SIMM, and with the CS-PPC not accepting anything bigger than 32 MB SIMMs, they won't work.

However, I know double-sided "normal" 32 MB SIMMs with "thin/slim" chips can be found (as in chips that are nearly flush with the SIMM PCB).

You've got balls of steel, resoldering those SIMM sockets. Respect, man. Let us know how it goes.

If I decide to resolder them, I'll either use proper gear (soldering station with suction pump to remove the old sockets) or have someone else do it...

Having vertical SIMM sockets give two advantages:
1: The possibility of using a socketed oscillator, for easier overclocking experimentation.
2: Increased airflow over the four ram controller IC's between the top and 2nd SIMM socket, and the possibility of installing heatsinks on these 4 IC's.

I'll let you know when I've done it, first I have to go buy the SIMM sockets...

cant the cyberstormPPC run with a @66Mhz osc?..

there was a web page cyberstorm PRO where it was watercooled clocked at very high speed..cant find it now

but i think it was clocked higher than a 66Mhz osc..
