AmigaOS 3.9 problem
« on: November 24, 2005, 04:47:00 PM »
Hello everybody

I`m using AmigaOS 3.9 under WinUAE. Whenever I start the emulation I get the error :

Intuition is attempting to reset the Workbench screen. Please close all Windows, except drawers.

Sometimes, by closing one or two message windows the Workbench indeed manages to get the screen to a workable resolution & depth screens. Other times I just can`t get it to work.

Any ideas on why I`m getting this error on every reboot?

Well basically, there must be some program or requester popping up just before Intuition tries to change screenmode. The only thing to do is to try to find out what is causing it and either delay the start of that program, or fix it if it's a requester complaining about "Insert volume..." etc if that's whats causing it.

There is a program which opens a window before the workbench screen appears. Check which program it is and remove it.

I guess it is the CD-ROM driver which is not properly configured. Probably there is a message saying "unable to open uae.device unit 2" or such in the background.

Move the CD-ROM driver from Devs/DosDrivers to Storage/DosDrivers if you don't want CD-ROM support. Otherwise correct the configuration, it should be uaescsi.device unit 0.

Didn't you use an emergency disk to install OS 3.9 ?

Bye,
Thomas

Exactly, I also get the warning window :

Cache:CDFS Cannot open cdrom.device unit 0.

I`d used that unit to install the OS in the first place. I`ve now placed another cdrom but Workbench doesn`t seem to recognise it. What can I do about this?

[update]

I didn`t use an emergency disk. I just extracted the archive on the volume I eventually installed. Is that bad?

What machine are you using? My guess is that the CD-ROM is unit 1 on your IDE port, not unit 0.

I`m using WinUAE. The fact is that after removing the error message (clicking on cancel if I recall correctly), I can place the AmigaOS 3.9 installation cd and read it.

Nonetheless, when I press eject (the eject button of the pc cd-rom drive) and try to insert any other cdrom I cannot see the contents.

Shouldn't the mountlist (devs:dosdrivers/CDO) use uaescsi.device instead of cdrom.device under WinUAE?

@Doobrey

Yes, that's correct. It only recognizes uaescsi.device.

So? What am I doing wrong after all?

I`ve selected the uaescsi.device under the misc options. I also used the Nero ASPI layer. I`m running under Windows XP.

How on earth did you get cdrom.device in there ???

How did you install OS 3.9 ?

Bye,
Thomas

Edit: I guess I know it: it's not OS3.9, it's Amithlon installed on WinUAE. You shouldn't do this if you don't know what you are doing. Go and buy the original OS3.9 CD. It's probably a pirated copy of Amithlon anyway.

I only wanted to try the OS out. I`m not gonna go buy a OS that I don`t find functional. That is why I`m using WinUAE!

Sometime later I just might buy myself a Pegasos based system. I`m just looking at what exists out there.

So you didn't buy OS3.9 like you said you'd do in this thread:
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19064

The people here are actively using their machines and care. I can't shake off the feeling that you've pirated your entire Amiga setup and it bothers me then that you come here and expect the people to fix all your pirated problems.

Just my 2 cents

So why did you buy Windows ? There is no demo version available, either. How did you know that you'd find it functional ?

It all stems from 10 years of Windows experience. You know that your cdrom or DVD-rom will play as soon as you insert it in the drive.

Until I`m sure I like it, I`m not buying! Guess I`m on my own!
