Save my harddisk!
« on: October 13, 2005, 04:39:03 AM »
Hi folks,

My Amiga 1200 has been lying around at my parents house 1500kms north in Queensland.  It so happens I am there now.  I'm thinking its time to rip the contents of the hard drive and get it on my PC (it could die anyday now).  Anyway, was wondering whether it was possible to rip a hdf straight from the Amiga?  and also whether WinUAE would be able to use it like my old machine.

I'm still unsure how I can get the data off there without using an older PC with a serial cable and doing null-modem (it should be fun waiting for a few hundred megs to transfer).  I don't have enough time to track an ethernet adapter or such, but just to be sure, no-one can think of any better options?

Well, I'm grateful to anyone who can help me out...

Thanks,

Jarrod

I believe recent versions of WinUAE can read Amiga drives directly. So you should just be able to connect it to your PC (probably need a 2.5"->3.5" kit) and then back it up to another drive under UAE (which could be a hardfile or a subdirectory on your PC's drive.

I've never actually done this myself, though, but at least a few here have. They can probably give you more detailed instructions.

Uhm... well...

You plug in the HD into your PC that runs 2000 or XP.

That all that is needed for WinUAE to recognize the HD.

If you want to be able to play with it with HDToolbox, I think you would have to use the uaehf.device (don't remember if this was to be found internally when running WinUAE or if you would have to install it under AOS under WinUAE, think it was internally emulated though).

Amiga 1200, Mirage Tower, PC-Key 1200, Blizzard 1260/50, SCSI Kit, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD, Mediator SX, Soundblaster 128, Voodoo 3 and Realtek 8139.

Hi,

It's as easy as Legerdemain says... As far as I remember, you also need the "UAESCSI.device" checkbox to be ticked, on the "Misc" page of WinUAE's configuration settings. You also need to go to the "Hard Drives" page and use the "Add Hard Drive" button.

I've used WinUAE to do this process in reverse - and transferred a load of stuff to my A3000's SCSI drive this way. The drive just appears in the emulated Amiga environment and you can use whatever Amiga app you like to manage the transfer, e.g. Directory Opus.

Hi,

If you get Amiga Forever V6, you can plug your hard drive in as a slave to the pc & in the configuration you can get it to see your amiga drive when it loads the amiga emulation. You can then use Opus to copy everything across to the PC drive "work". You will need to rename your amiga drive partitions as WorkA or any name to make it easier to see what & where you are transfering stuff.

Thanks for all the replies.  Didn't know it was so easy.  Looks like my Amiga 1200 setup will have a new life on my PC!
