ARexx for Workbench 1.3???
« on: September 24, 2005, 04:18:24 AM »
Hello Folks,

Does anyone know where to get ARexx version 1.4 or 1.5 for Workbench 1.3? I am not even sure of the legalities of asking that, but, I own OS3.1 which comes with ARexx, but, I am looking to use it on my 1.3 A2000 but cannot find it anywhere.

I am obviously willing to pay for it if someone has it for sale. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I bought arexx for my A2000 back when I first got it, I think in 1988. I got the manual and the disk and had to install it when I started buying graphics programs that required it. I don't know what the legalities are about sharing the program or anything but if someone could tell me that it's okay, like the author okays it's distribution as freeware, I'd be willing to dig it out and upload it somewhere. The A2K was running os 1.3, still is actually. My wife needs 1.3 to run certain games she's fond of. :-P

Hello,

I was considering actually trying to get in touch with William Hawes himself, I believe he lives somewhere here in Massachusettes if I am not mistaken. I honestly have no desire to copy the man's software illegally, I would be willing to pay for it. The terrible part is, I have it under OS3.1 and OS3.5, which I dont use, I like Workbench 1.3 and have been using it forever, and as I code C programs I would like to create some ARexx build scripts and add an ARexx interface to some projects that I am working on.

I will have to look into this I guess.

Thanks for the reply's though folks! :-D

Thanks,
Mike

Kickstart 1.3 didnt support ARexx and programs running under 1.3 dont
have the ARexx support either.

I beg to differ, I once owned ARexx v1.5 for the workbench 1.3, unfortunately I no longer have it. :-(

1.5 was, at the time, a separate product as ARexx was not integrated into Amiga OS until KS2.0.

Thanks,
Mike

Itix: ... there's no such thing as OS support for Arexx.. Never has been.. Arexx is indepemndent 3rd party program that Commodore just happened to License in their further versions..

I do have original Arexx, which I purcased directly from autor (Will Hawes IIRC?) well before Commodore used it on their OS:

Besides.. Arexx-port is totally program dependant feature, and there definitely were a considerable number of programs with Arexx port well before 1.4Alpha (later to be released as 2.0)...

I have a purchased Arexx that runs under OS 1.3, somewhere.  I know I used to use it to run P-Files for my old C-Net Amiga BBS.  :-)

It did have a seperate Arexx manual, as well, which, as I remember, was not terribly helpful at answering anything at all.

I wasn't aware there were so many versions of Arexx.  I just thought there was one 1.3 executable environment, and then a newer built-in one for 2.1 and above.  Give me a day or two and I'll let you know which one my old originally-purchased OS 1.3 version is.

Mike,
My AREXX 1.0 Manual lists the contact address as PO Box 308 Maynard, Mass., but that was way back in 1987. Hope this helps.

Pete

Hi Pete,

Yeah, I got the same address and his phone number as well, although, I think calling would be rather rude. ;-)

I am going to send a letter to his PO Box and see what happens, maybe in the interim I will find someone who wants to sell me thier old ARexx disk for 1.3. :-D

Thanks,
Mike

When I first started using the Amiga to make animations I was really turned on by the multitasking and then I started using progs that used arexx and that knocked my socks off. For instance, Digipaint had an arexx port and somebody built a kind of shell for it called Digimate that allowed you to create animations from within Digipaint, a program which had nice painterly features, but no animation. Digimate worked great. There were similar shells for other programs using arexx. Animation Station used its arexx port to acquire Art Department Pro capabilities to sepia tone frames of an animation, which I used to make a 'flashback' sequence in one anim. All of this was done under 1.3 with arexx purchased as a separate program. I think it cost like $30 or something...So it was available back then before it got sucked into the os release. Remember the ARP libraries? Same sort of story...

Hello Folks,

An update on this topic!!

I may have a solution, in the interest of carrying on the general hacking spirit that the Amiga has always fostered, and in the face of the sad fact that it looked as though I would never find a copy of ARexx for Workbench 1.3, I had an idea ...

I wondered if it was possible that things with ARexx had not changed from what was available on WB1.3 to WB3.1. That hunch paid off.

I created a floppy with a rexxc directory and copied the rexx libraries and RexxMast from my fully purchased Workbench 3.1 install floppies. I then started up WinUAE with a 1.3 WB and KS Rom image, loaded my "adf" arexx floppy, assigned REXX: df0:rexxc and copied the rexxsyslib.library and rexxsupport.library to LIBS:

I then started RexxMast and it started up without issue. I ran a small script:

/* test */

for i=0 to 9
j=i-1
say j
end

... and that worked fine. Apparently, things didnt change a whole lot with Arexx from when I purchased my ARexx 1.0 floppy back in the 80's to the version that was integrated with Workbench 2.04.

So, for anyone out there who wants to run ARexx on WB1.3 and can't find it anywhere, if you own Workbench3.1, you can just use that version on your 1.3 system, at least in theory, since I have not put this on my A2000 yet, just in WinUAE.

Hope this makes some people as happy as I am, and I am sorry for the long post.

Thanks,
Mike
