Amiga 1200 Speed (And my 1000'th Post!)
« on: January 12, 2005, 02:04:13 PM »
Hey :-D

Wow! 1000 Posts!

Anyway, I currently am running my a1200, with OS3.9 and through AGA. Can anyone think of any way's to speed it up? Its an 040 Apollo with 32mb ram, but its way slow.....

Any ideas? (Without Spending a fortune!)

You could buy Oxyron Patch to speed up your 040 and FPU functions. Or try RemApollo from Aminet.

It's possible to overclock your 040, but you need very good cooling for the CPU.

Having more speed, you need to buy an 68060 accelerator card.

Its 040/28 :-(

I thought about overclocking it, but it seems a lot of work / chance for very little game and i heared somewhere that if i overclock it I run a risk of knocking out some sort of timing between the CPU / RAM and risk making it run even slower.

Also, if there's a timing problem you'll get a lot of Guru's :-(

I know - my first accelerator (030) had a timing problem and all it would do was Guru.

With AGA FBlit and FText helps with browsers.

OxyPatcher useful too.

Has the Apollo the 68040.library in rom?

Maybe get a graphics card. Not sure what options are available without a Blizzard board that supports BVision though, or if you put it in a tower with PCI bus board.

I think there ARE choices though, I just dont know of them.

But I hear the graphics card can help quite a bit.  Havent proven that yet myself as I'm still waiting to get my BlizzardPPC fixed.  Got a BVision collecting dust in mean time...

Thanks,

Neofree

Hi,

I have a A1200 with Mediator and a Voodoo 4. I have never regret that I bought those two Items. Workbench windows moves really smooth and everything feels fast and that with a resolution of 1024x768 with 32 bit colours.

I browse the net and it goes really fast.

I have a Blizzard PPC with 060/50MHz and 603/210MHz, but I don't know if that matter when you have a Voodoo card.

I can highly recommend this to any amiga fanatic...  :)

@LinchpiN:

You can use remapollo to move exec.library to fastmem instead of chipmem. You will definately feel the speed improvement in Workbench.

If you eventually get a faster CPU though, I'll snag that 040 off you no problem  :-)

You could also replace the 040 on your apollo with a 060.. you would need a voltage regulator though..
