A4000 Upgrade Project Problems
« on: January 07, 2005, 06:19:30 AM »
I got a nice used A4000 today..booted up nicely into 3.0.  I attempted to upgrade the ROMS to 3.1 with ROMS from SoftHut.  The instructions aren't explicit on chip orientation but I aligned the ROMS' notch with the notch on the socket.  When I rebooted the power light flashed about 10 times short and then 1 long...if this means anything.  Anyway, pulled them and replaced the old ROMS and still no boot but the power light is acting normally.

The stock hard drive didn't have a jumper set that I could see...should it be set to master or does the Amiga care?

Any help appreciated!

Bob

I'm not 100% sure about this but I seem to remember the ROMs in my
A1200 being 2 pins less than the socket provided for them.

They may need to be seated to the furthest pins on the right.

Don't go by this though, double check - especially since this could
apply from the front or reverse (depending on how you are looking at
the motherboard).

Another thing that is worth keeping in mind is that there's 2 ROMs (at
least on A1200) and they have to be put in their own socket. I
couldn't tell which was which - so I never tampered with mine.

This was a problem for me too, as was the IDE interface which wasn't
clearly labelled at all.

Usually there are ridges on cables etc. to stop you inserting them in
the wrong way.

Hi Beller,

The power light flashing 10 times sounds like the machine is immediately guruing but not quite getting there. The ROM must at least do something even if it's not much or the light wouldn't flash like that.

Check to be sure you have the A4000 ROM chips and not the more common A1200 ones.

Thanks for the info...I got the ROMS from SoftwareHut which I understand is the North American source.  Both are marked A4000 and both are numbered for the slot.  I found a local Commodore repair shop about 30 miles from me.  Think I'll take it in for some professional TLC.

Swap the ROMs and see if that helps.  No this won't do any damage.  Just do not reverse the chips!
