Amiga to PC ZIP Disk Format ?
« on: January 07, 2005, 03:54:11 AM »
Hi -

I'm full of questions tonight, aren't I?
I've found that many files I download with my PC
from Aminet are too large to fit on a 770K floppy.

I plugged my ZIP 100 SCSI into my Amiga 1200 (with GVP 1230 and 1291 SCSI adapter) and used GVP's Faaast Prep to format the drive.  No problem - except that the PC will not recognize the ZIP disk now.  I've read that the ZIP Disk can be configured with CrossDoss somehow - but how?  Setting up the Floppy Drives was EZ - just dragging the icons from one drawer to the next.  Do I have do conduct some fancy CLI mountlist modifications to get this to work?

Sorry for all the questions - I'm rusty !

The FAT95.lha package from Aminet has mountlists for PC formatted Zip disks.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Hello,

The mount list was a text file with device information, generally used for earlier HDD Controllers that didn't support RDB.

Depending on the Version of Amiga OS the device driver whitch is a text file could be located in Devs: Devs:DOSDrivers or SYS:Storage/DOSDrivers and Finally DEVS:MountList. I think that is the correct sequence used to search for a proper driver.

It listed the number of Surfaces (Heads), Sectors per block, Sectors per track, Low and high Cylinders.

People how had to Format Hard Drives in the early 1980's know
how tedious a process it was to prep hard drives.

I have missed a lot of Device settings for the test file
generally a a zip drive wound be called zp0: or zip: as a device name.

Cheers

Shaf

I've read that the ZIP Disk can be configured with CrossDoss somehow - but how?

First of all, you must not mess the disk with Faast Prep or HDToolBox. If you did, you need to fdisk the zip disks on PC again. Create single partition covering the whole disk (well you can use multiple partitions too, but imo single partition makes more sense, and this is how the Zips are configured when shipped).

On Amiga, if you want to use a mountlist, to generate the list use:
Code: [Select]
MountDos devicename.device unitnumber MAXTRANSFER=0x1fe00 GENERATE > zip.mountlist

Or if you just want to mount the partition right away, use:

Code: [Select]
MountDos devicename.device unitnumber MAXTRANSFER=0x1fe00 MOUNT

These commands use CrossDOS. If you want to use Fat95 filesystem, add FAT95 switch to commandline.

Hello Piru (and others) !

The ZIP drive I'm using is the fancy ZIP Plus drive that is both SCSI and Parallel.  I'm connecting it via the SCSI port on my GVPA1230/1291 adapter.

Thank you for the suggestions.  Today is Saturday and my day to play with the Amiga.  I'll try your different suggestions and see what works out !

You guys are all The Best !

THANKYOUThankYouthankyou!
