I agree on the MHz thing, with the exception of games (and raytracing, but that's hardly a common use for the average person) why do you need 3Ghz? What can a 3GHz computer do, in real world everyday average use terms, that a 600MHz can't? (Aside from running Windows XP )

Exactly! In the wintel world there is this (as we all know) strange obsession about MHz ratings. And of course you would need a fast system to run a totally bloated OS as the WindowsXP really is.

Before I bought my Pegasos I hadn't come anywhere near the Amiga platform for a while. I was kind of used to the wintel way of thinking and I thought "well, it's a pity that the only option is a G3 @ 600MHz, that won't get me anywhere". But to tell the truth I don't really think I would notice any big differences between my current setup and a G4 at twice that MHz ratio. Not in the way I use computers anyway. The system can't more than fly. And it flies allready!

Of course, if I were heavily into 3D rendering or other heavy tasks, it would make a difference. but since I am more of a "normal" user it doesn't!

When it comes to games I believe that the same bloat factor applies again. On Windows you need fast extremely fast CPU's just to boot Windows. And then Windows steals a lot of resources just to keep on going. With a lean OS you will get the same experienced performance from a much lower performance CPU. And then very much is up to 3D HW and stuff like that anyway  ...
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

I'm actually quite dissapointed with how noisey my G4 eMac is compared to the old G3 iMacs. Hopefully PPCs will get cooler again and won't need fans.

How does ~55 million transistors sound to you (i.e. referring to IBM’s next PPC 970 CPU)?

Depends on the Windows version.

Simply false in terms generalization.  I have booted Windows 95 (OSR2) on i386DX33 with 5MB of RAM.

WindowsXP does provide a lot of services for programmers/users to use.

For example;
- Application Layer Gateway Service
- Automatic Updates
- COM+ Event System
- DHCP Client
- Distributed Link Tracking Client
- DNS Client
- Event Log
- IPSEC Services
- IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
- Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
- Logical Disk Manager
- Messenger
- Plug and Play
- Print Spooler
- Protected Storage
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- Secondary Logon
- Security Accounts Manager
- Server
- Shell Hardware Detection
- SSDP Discovery Service
- Task Scheduler
- TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
- Telephony
- Terminal Services
- Universal Plug and Play Device Host
- Wireless Zero Configuration
- Windows Management Instrumentation
- Windows Audio
- WebClient
and 'etc'

WinXP also provides; POSIX/OS/2 /Win32/Win16/DirectX/dotNET framework APIs, OBDC Administration and 'etc') .

It depends on the given OS features.

By how much?

Note that AROS is available for X86 btw…

@KennyR

Same has been said about the G3/600 module for a long time, but
remember that Genesi is a company that has some real HW-
developers, so I'm 100% certain that a working proto of that
module does exist, and now we just have to wait for the actual
production.

Having said that I'm not sure if I would upgrade since I have
a completly fanless system atm (and I like it).
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Hello uncharted,

I bought the whole system, without the DVD-ROM, pre assembled from my dealer. I only had to connect the wires at home (you can read it in my review of Pegasos+MorphOS :-D).

I know in the past some Amiga dealers sold "air"-stuff, but I trust this dealer in being a cautious dealer.
He will not sell something if he doesn't know for sure it will come out (like that site that claims OS4 will be out on 28 feb 2003 in one of the other threads :-)).

About the speed and noise:
I've got this I-Cute tower at home with 6 fans and the only real noise I hear is when you put in a cd in the drive and the clicking of the mouse and keyboard!! :-D
It's also true that a comparison between a G3 600 MHZ and G4 1 GHz is irrelevant in daily use (ofcourse it matters if you're doing a lot of CPU intensive mathematics), but it's nice to can say: "I've got a 1  GHz G4 unit inside" :-D :-D

Actually I was debating this part with a person who just bought a 2.4 GHz Athlon and uses it for making his own movies (and burning it on DVD). I've seen everything in action and to be honest, I was not impressed by the calculating of 1 minute of film to MPEG standard, it took minutes to complete!! (I don't know how many minutes. It is less than 10 I think)
I am wondering exactly how much CPU power goes to only running the Windows OS. Does anybody know this?

Hello Mountain_Myst,

I've got a very friendly dealer :-)
I know for sure he wouldn't take my money if he was doubting about this upgrade module.

But you're right, if I can't have this upgrade I'll just use this money to buy MakeCD V3.2C and that Settlers alike game Knights and Merchants (or so). :-D
