scsi external cd rom/A1200?
« on: November 15, 2004, 04:33:50 PM »
Hi could i attach any scsi 2 pcmcia external cd rom to my A1200 desktop and would i need a driver before i could use? I have a 2x reno drive that i use with my surf squirrel but i have seen an 8x scsi 2 pcmcia drive and would like to use that instead.
Could i also attach any scsi cd rom to the A1200 via the surf squirrel (not pcmcia)? Because i have also seen quite a few external scsi cd roms for pc or mac and they have the same scsi socket on the back as the surf squirrel?
One more question i have a pcmcia cd rom that i use on my pc and was wondering if i could use that with my A1200 and would i need a driver?
Please any help on scsi drives for the A1200 and drivers is very much appreciated as it gets a little confusing as to what kind of scsi devices can be used on the A1200 and having the right kind of cables etc... Same goes for pcmcia drives.
My aim is to keep my A1200 in it's case and use my surf squirrel or pcmcia slot for a scsi drive:)

Cheers P:)

You can only use the PCMCIA SCSI if there are drivers.  So probably not.

But, Yes.  Since you have the Squirrel already you should be able to attach most any SCSI device to that.  Just don't get anything over an 8x CD-ROM or slow HD as you'll not be able to take advantage of the extra speed due to PCMCIA bottlenecks.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Hi Thanks for your speedy reply :)
I did forget to mention i have a blizzard 1230 with the scsi connector so i was thinking if i get a scsi cd rom with a 50 centronic connector on the back and then get a 50 centronics male to 25 pin male cable i can then attach the scsi cd rom to the blizzard scsi connector? I have the scsi driver disk with my blizzard so would that be ok?
Also you mentioned connecting any scsi cd rom to the surf squirrel i should be able to connect a scsi cd rom with the 50 centronics connect to that instead but i am not sure of the speed difference if connected to the blizzard? Also if i can connect any scsi cd rom to the surf squirrel do i use the scsi driver on the surf squirrel disk and will that driver work for almost all scsi cd roms?
Sorry for the long winded questions but i want to get the right scsi cd rom etc....and not waste money finding out i have something thats no good for the A1200.
Before i go i did read somewhere that aminet.org has a pcmcia cd rom driver would that work for any pcmcia cd rom which i use on the pc/laptop?

Looks like you are confusing things a bit.
Basically, on a hardware level it doesn't really make much of a difference which type of drive you buy, all scsi drives, be it a single speed sony or a 40 speed plextor use the same "driver".
You need a CD Filesystem, AmiCDFS is free on Aminet or C= gives us one with WB3.1 and up.
To make the drive work on a hardwarelevel the best (read fastest) option would be to connect it to the blizzard.
the scsi device (1230scsi.device) is ROM based and does not require any additional drivers (the supplied disk has utilities on it). All you would need is to set up a filesystem.

@ BackToSchool

I had an A1200 with a Squirrel once, before I got my A4000T, and I can tell you it is better to leave that alone and build your SCSI empire on the 1230 SCSI. There will be much better performance and fewer problems related to the A1200 PCMCIA.

Yes, use the Blizzard SCSI.  It's faster, DMA capable, etc.  That way you can use the PCMCIA for an Ethernet card.  You can probably sell the Surf Squirrel for a good amount on eBay too.
