Linux + Joysticks

I've asked on the Gentoo forums, but nobody has come up with any usuable advice.  So, here's hoping.

Has anybody ever managed to get a joypad/stick working under linux? USB or SBLive gameport?  I've got the right options compiled in my kernel (Gentoo 1.4 rc3) and i can "modprobe joydev" and it loads joydev.o kernel module, but NOTHING ever sees a joystick.  I have a standard analog joypad installed on an SBLive  port, with latest ALSA, and I have a USB wheel on my VIA southbridge motherboard.  I have emerge'd -u world today so I have latest versions of everything.

I'm tearing my hair out!! HELP!!!!!! :-(
