Well in this household, things were heavily stacked against the Amiga:

AMD Athlon 1200
GF Ti 4200
256mb ram
etc

AMD 900
Ati 9000 pro

Gateway :-D  celeron computer

A old 100mhz laptop

And an Xbox.

In terms of the amigas:

1 A1200, 040 40mhz
1 A2000, 030, 25mhz
1 CD32

From tomorrow however, things will once again swing in the Amiga's favour as I will be selling my Gateway and the motherbord and cpu of my AMD board (I have butchered both for components to use with an A1  ;-) ).

Hopefully by July or August I will have an A1 as well :-) .

Too be quite honest I hardly view my PEECEE as computer, rather a standard home appliance  :-o , which is required as a necessity for Uni work and Day of Defeat  ;-) .  In contrast, after having abandoned the Amiga  scene a few years ago, I'm finding that I am using them more and more!  They are simply more enjoyable to use even if they are hundreds of times slower (I tried WinUAE, but it does not give the same feeling as the real thing, oh well maybe I'm one just for nostalgia).

My turn:

I was Amiga only until may 2001, when I got  a laptop. I really wanted to go PPC on my loyal A1200, but I wasn't sure because the long wait of the A1. I'm still going for the A1, but in the mean time, I got the laptop running the crappy XP (M$ tax sadly) but using WinUAE quite a lot, cos I'm not native english speaker and the speller of Final Writer has no equal for someone learning English as a second language. I also manage to install Red Hat 8.0 and start learning Linux, but still using the loyal A1200 for special task and games.  :-D

I'm getting the A1 as soon as becomes commercially available. :pint:

I own an A2000, 1 meg chip, AOS 1.3.3,(1989) with GVP Impact II (1990) w 8 megs, SCSI with 180 meg. Fujitsu on it.
I love, love, love it. And you know how limited it is, right? I will, someday, get an 060 @60 MHz, maybe the coldfire project will someday get done, who knows?

I have spent SOOOO many years going into "Electronics Boutique", gawking at the myriad of games available, crying, and thinking "surely, the grass is greener on the other side", and at the same time, bad mouthing windoze every chance I got (split personality?). Then Aug 2002, got me a spiffy new machine, use w98se, friend had a disk lying around, he didn't need. Then, all the years of me bad-mouthing the os came woefully true. I can't stand this thing!!! It's a 2.26GHz FSB 533, 1 Gig. ram (motherboard can hold 3), MSI Ti4600, 2  40Gig HDs on a raid card piece of Garbage. I HATE it. It won't do what I WANT IT TO DO. I can't copy games into a ram drive. From the os, I can't make one. And the list goes on and on, etc. I am dissapointed EVERY time I turn it on to use it and usually in more than 4 or 5 ways. I'm not getting another version (w2k, xp), I'm not giving BG any cash for this junk.

I'm probably going to pull out the MB and put in an A1.

Wether I do that or not, I'm still getting the 800 MHz A1, AOS4.0.

I am not an AInc./Eyetech/Hyperion shareholder/salesman/developer....etc.

Amiga! ...ink, like it thinks, like I think, like it thinks, like I th...

So I guess that A500, 600, 1000, 2000, CDTV, CD32, are pure garbage then? Thanks for posting here.

My main Amiga is an A2000 with an 060 blizz, 128meg ram, 4 gig hd, cdrom drive, ual floppies, cgx64-3d, os 3.9 on an NEC fe700 flatscreen multisync monitor.  Got an A3000 waiting to be towerized if the Shark ever comes out, and my original A1000 still gets used to play some of the old games.  Gotta keep on using that one, cause it cost me $2200 USD back in 1986, so dammit I'm gonna keep getting my moneys worth out of it.  Oh yeah, got a Compaq Pee Cee that we use to access email.

/me pulls up to confession box

I remember seeing my first amiga in 87 (Defender of the Crown) and wanting so badly to own one ever since. It wasn't until '89 when my dream came true and consequently enjoyed many years of bliss because of it. All my friends owned a miggy, and we used to swap game tips in the school yards for hours, I made many good friends through the Amiga too. But I was also a very anti-peecee back then - I think thats what brought us Amigans closer, as we rallied together during class breaks to flaunt our h/w superiority on those poor peecee goers, hehe.

But my miggy died in '94 while playing Desert Strike. I spent over 2yrs agonizing whether I would turn to the dark side. It wasn't until Doom and windows 95 hit that I conceded to buying into the whole Peecee thing. I still felt like I was downgrading for 2 years after that! If it wasn't for the rapid development of 3D gaming, I think I would hav been using a console for my gaming needs and probably a cheap mac for work purposes.

BTW, that first amiga I saw. was from an old school buddy who I still keep in touch with. His dad still uses it for just about everything. He in my mind is a true Amigan, he makes me and my friend pale in comparison. And still plugs the old yamaha keyboard for some midi playing from time to time.

@KrasH

I think that you should go ahead and bring the 1200's to the lan party just for the hell of it and freak them out, let thm try wormsdc on the amiga and et them see how it is, but yea, in anyways, go for the freaking!
There was a time I can remember computers were fun...I miss my A1200.

Hi From Chicago!

I have been reading news and discussions on Amiga.Org for a while now.  I have decided to
respond to this post and be heard.

My personal computer is an A3000/030 with 16 megs Ram, 10 Gig Scsi Drive, CD-Rom, OS
V3.9, X-Surf ethernet card, and a KDS 17 inch monitor.

I run a business out of my house and the business has: A1200/060 32 megs Ram, 20 Gig IDE
Drive, PCMCIA ethernet card (National Amiga), and a Sony 17 inch monitor.

My partners computer is a: A4000T/060 32 megs Ram, 40 Gig IDE Drive, CDRW Drive, X-surf
ethernet card, and a Compaq 17 inch monitor.

We have all the Amigas networked together and we have the networked connected to a
cable modem.  My partner had never used an Amiga before until she began working with
me about 2 yrs ago.  She has a Compaq laptop at home, but she doesn't use it much
anymore.  And when we get AmigaOne/OS4.0, she is going to take the A4000T home.

She always tells me that the A3000 sold her on the Amiga.  How can a 13 yr old
computer do all that it can do (networked, browse the net, so on).  I am just glad
the A3000 is still working after all these years.  I still have the original
Commodore 1950 monitor that I bought with the A3000 and it still
works, just sitting in the closet since we have much better monitors now.

Thanks for you time.

FluffyMcDeath asked:
Quote
Are there still people here who have only one computer and it's an Amiga and are feeling trapped by it?

ANYONE who's read enough of my posts knows that I use a 12 y.o. A2000HD model online....... actually, its older than that but I bought it in 1991 as an upgrade over my KS1.2 A500!

I had to access a Win-PC at a Employment Bureau initially to upload my website Exotic transportation wnich I built upon what I'd learned at a Tech College WEB DESIGN course in October 1990.

Currently I use FTPlus, a plug-in to AWeb, to maintain my site.

Oh- the OTHER use for that PC access since was to upload my Avatar to AmigaOrg.

° Incidentially, I took along a A600HD to display a visual presentation at a film course last year and NONE of the fellow students knew what it was. This, in spite of many of the teen students having used Casablanca NLE systems at high school!

The only "feeling trapped by ...(using) an Amiga" is in not having access to certain modern digital services, and .... that NOT being able to navigate AmigaOrg easily with a Amiga browser!

(Imagine wanting to go to a MG Rally, and they told you to come in a Ford Taurus?)

I'll soon be almost Amiga only, as soon as my Mirage 4k Pro arrives and I get my hands on Voodoo5 and NIC.

After that only place I use PC is at work. Lady of the house may have issues with this, guess I have to teach her how to use a computer instead of pseudo-computer ;).

Edit:  Yeah! Got my hands on a another A4k.. life is smiling upon me.
Before you judge me take a look at you....

I'm Amiga only in practise, because I'm using only Amiga in daily basis and I can do everything I need with it. But I have other computers too: One 450MHz PC which I use only for DirectConnect (about once a week), two SparcStations and some 8bit Commodores for hobby :) My only monitor is attached to Amiga and I use pc with VNC and Sparcs with X over ethernet.
Daily MorphOS user and Amiga active.

Hello FluffyMcDeath,

As mentioned in other threads I also had only an original Amiga 1200 until the arrival of my new computer last tuesday :-)

I started with a Vic20 way back in 1983 and progressed through a C64, A500, A600 to my A1200 Blizzard040/40 64MB with SCSI2 CD-ROM, CD-Writer, 4.2 GB and 9.1 GB harddrive. Oh, also an IDE 850 MB harddrive inside :-)

I solve problems with pc's at work (software and a little bit hardware) and that's enough for me.

If you look at the enormous speeds of the chips these days and then you look at how blown up Windows is, you can't stop wondering if the speed increases are ment for the users or for the next  version of Windows??
I want a small and efficient system, period! (and it's not Windows or Linux or Apple for me)

Spidey

I'm not Amiga only these days...

For games (Battlefield 1942, SOF2, Quakes) I use my 2 PC's...

For most other applications I use one of my 3 Amiga 3k's... (Technically I do own a 2k and an a500, but their packed away...)
Some of those items are:
1.  Surf (occasionaly on PC, depending a page requirements)
2.  Listen to music (I have no noticable loss of speed, I have the audio card overclocked to 64 MHz, can surf and listen to music, no prob...)
3.  Mechforce, ok I do play one game on the Amiga...
4.  Programming - gave up on the Amiga, insuffient tools right now...
5.  As with most everyone else here, would love a A1....

Some times I do feel 'trapped' ...  Software development is frustrating compared to Windows.  All new games are appearing on the PC (remember when the Amiga was king for new games?)

Don't get me wrong I greatly enjoy my 3k's, just ready for an A1...

Sadly my A1200 died 2 years ago. However my Athlon 1.4 Thunderbird with GeForce4 card means that I use WinUAE so I can :

Running OS3.9
Playing CD32 games
Render with Real3D
Run Digita Office at lightning speeds!
Surf the net
Check my e-mail PC-virus free

Yes - I do buy and play the odd PC games and use one at work. I also pay for every Amiga Forever update that's released and buy Amiga software whenever I can. Until OS4 gets released...
