Uninstalling Hard Drive

Hello all,

I have recently acquired two amiga 500's one is in pretty bad shape, the keyboard doesn't work properly and it looks a bit crap. But it does have a hard drive attached to it's side. The other one looks good and works good and doesn't have a hard drive.

I couldn't see any obvious way to uninstall the hard drive and re-install it on the other machine?

If any one could help out or point me in the direction of help that would be greatly appreciated.

You don't uninstall the HD at all, if it's plugged in at the side just move it of the main unit and plug it in the better looking unit. That, AFAIK, is the same for all HD units made for the A500.

One problem might be that the Amiga 500 may be running Kickstart 1.2 so it can't boot from it.

And it's always better to ask, you'd be far more stupid if you just started ripping and plugging if you're not sure.

Well I plugged it into the second Amiga and now it doesn't want to boot. So what do you mean that it wont boot if it's running Kickstart 1.2. Do you mean that the Amiga has Kickstart 1.2 on it or the Hard Drive does ?

How do I upgrade to a new Kickstart if this is the case?

Also if anyone know about how to put the Ram expansion in please give me a hand!! I can do it on one machine but not the other.... woe is me.

The A500 was sold with 2 different ROM versions, not counting the aA500+
1.2
1.3

One of the differences between 1.2 and 1.3 was that the latter could boot from hardrives while the first only boots from floppy disk.

To know what kickstart you've got is easy. You should see a screen with a hand holding a disk and telling you the version. If both are 1.3 then checl if the Hardrive is connected correctly. Try booting from disk and see if you get  an icon for the hardrive.

You could upgrade the Amiga top 1.3 (if indeed it's a 1.2 Amiga) by replacing the ROM. But I'll let somebody else guide you throught that. I really need to get some sleep now.
