Can I use a CD32 Kickstart in another Amiga?
« on: September 15, 2004, 10:12:47 PM »
The subject says it all, can I use a CD32 Kickstart in an A500 or A600?

There is only 1 off 16 bit ROM and the pinouts appear to be identical.

Anyone tried it?

I`ve seen it done on an A1200.Not in the flesh, but on a website, they did built a rom switcher for it.
Like the hairy pillock I am, I didn`t bookmark it :pissed:

Then again, you say it`s one 16bit rom ?? Could have sworn CD32s had 2 roms just as the other 32bit miggies did, at least the schematics I got here show it that way.

As for using it on an A500 or 600, If it really is 16 bit rom, maybe..
Dunno whether CBM built that rom on the assumption that it would at least have an 020 to run on.

Maybe the best way is to fire up UAE set to 68000 cpu and 1Mb chip with ECS and test an image of that rom ?

DOH!
 Just looked at a piccy on amiga-hardware.com...
 It is a single 1Mb rom image. I take it that was CBM and their famous cost cutting again..

@Stedy

 I have been dying to do the same...or somethng similar, mostly because I want to be able to access the CD32 AudioCD bootup Menu when I play a CD from Workbench and be able to exit at will.maybe someone can create a WHDLoad thingy to install the ROM to be used with  a special CD32 audio CDplayer and CD+G player and even VCD if you have the FMV card...............but of course this would have to be usable on any AGA AMiga at least.

There is sometyhing similar that lets you use the CDTV ROM, or at least the software in it...........but the CDPlayer is non functional, but it letss you use the CDTV screen saver and other stuff. I did it on my A600 once........it was neat

Also just imagine having a CD32 ROM in an A4000 or A1200 with a CDROM and being able to autoboot an Audio CD directly, and having it go to the Audio CD menu in the CD32! The software inside the CD32 ROM should have been included in all 3.1 ROMS as standard, so that when you eventually did upgrade to a CDROM drive.it would autoboot CD32 games and audio CD's................if someone ever creates a 3.5 ROM or 3.9 ROM......please take note of this.maybe make it a 5Mb ROM?  or at least 2mb to fit the stuff (I hate Kickflash crap!)

 This is part of the reason why I consider the CD32 the best Amiga ever made as far as its Amiganess....................trouble free booting of anykind.

ahhhh, I can dream can't I? :-)  although there is no need to dream..........someone out there can do it and needs to...and put the software on Aminet!   someone please!!!!!

:-)

 Erm.. the CD-ROM driver in the CD32 won`t work for IDE or SCSI drives.

2MB is the limit for a replacement rom (ie. not kicked to memory.
 Actually, it`s more like 2.5MB, but it`s in 4 different chunks ,3x512Kb + 1x1024Kb, but some Cyberstorm (maybe Blizzard PPC too??) take over one of the 512k areas for themselves.

 Why CBM couldn`t lay out these memory areas into one big linear space is a mystery to me..

Anyway, just to brag.. my A1200 flashrom gizmo has been working fine now for the last week. It`s only 1Mb, but it single boots straight into 3.9 with no resets.:-D
 Still need to get a proper PCB made, it`s currently a mass of stripboard,SMT board about 150 wires and a sprinkling of glue logic..

Just tried it on UAE, and it constantly reboots when it`s set to a bog standard 68000. I can only get it to a WB screen by setting it to 020. The latest version of WinUAE even popped up a message saying the rom needs an 020 and wouldn`t even attempt to run.

Oh com on!  you know what I mean..............they can make specific versions for the A600, A500 and A2000, and one for the A1200 and for the A4000, that directs the CD access to the IDE port or SCSI port..............

Amiga Definitely makes it possible!

The CD32's logo screen is cool too!

Does it have a menu for manipulating game saves?

Was there an actual Commodore CD32 keyboard or have people just been
using CDTV/spraint painted A4000 keyboards...

:-D

@Hyperspeed

Yes there was Official CD32 keyboards that were grey eactly like the CD32...basically an A4000 keyboard but just grey..........all the keys are grey except for the SHIFT, RETURN F1,F2....etc were black

 I happen to be the only person in the world that I know of that owns this keyboard :-)

There is a picture in the gallery if you look.its quite small unfortunately and I put some stickers on it and some Korean text letters on the keys (im going to remove them.

anyway just look at the pictures I have submitted and you will see it.  You can view it by going to my PMail screen and just scroll down and show yu the pics I have submitted. If you want a larger clearer version, I can send it to you.

this keyboard even has the CD32 logo on it! Although I dont believe that Commodore created this keyboard, but some other company made it for them.

Oh, I see it now. :-)
It's in the Events section. :lol:

It is probably a 3rd party product, but it looks really nice, nevertheless.

Is the CD player and all it's grapics (CD+G stuff) on that 3.1 ROM chip for the CD32?

IIRC in the CDTV all that type of stuff was on a different rom and it just had the standard 1.3 rom in it.

I have an old CD32 that died and it has the single 1meg rom (I believe some CD32s had the 2 rom setup like the A1200).  It would cool to make a rom switcher that could use that 3.1 ROM in my A1200.

@leirbag28

What's the box between the keyboard port and the cable?

I've seen one CD32 using a remote control, is that what it is?

What do you know about the SX32's RAM limit, for the Pro model it says
64Mb but I see some people selling 128Mb on theirs occasionaly!?

Is there still no way to use FMV + SX32 at the same time?
