Yup, I'd have to agree there, avoid Samsung like the plague for hard drives. They're generally fine for things like CD-Rom drives, memory etc., but I've had one die on me, plus several other peoples die when I was working at repairing the machines in Maplin. Maxtor are pretty good price/performance wise, and if it's not gonna be getting heavy use (and it's not), you should be fine. I've a Maxtor 80GB in mine that's on about 12-16 hours a day, but doesn't get heavy access, and it's fine 18 months later.
For backing up, I've a lot of stuff on mine, so what I do is use a 2nd hard drive (a 40GB IBM), and periodically copy everything across.
A thin drive shouldn't be too much hassle to fit in the 1200 case. It's been done for years and years, but again, if you don't fancy the hassle, find someone upgrading a laptop HD and throw them an offer for their old HD, or have a scour of EBay...

I've always had good expeeriences with Seagate drives; they're usually very quiet, and nice and slim.

The bad reports on the Samsungs is a bit worrying as I recently put one in my PC after two Western Digitals died on me in quick succession - I do keep regular back ups of important stuff on CD though as rubbish ATI drivers for my 9700 pro tend to force me to reformat the drive about once a month (tends to be the only reliable way of clearing old ones out!!) - Still trying to find stable drivers for it.

Strange that, I never EVER had a problem with a Western Digital HD, actually I love them (the one in my PC is 5 years old and the one in my A600 is nearly 11 years old!)

I'm partial to mounting HDs where they touch metal, because of the heat transfer from the drive. Didn't prevent me from mounting a 2,5" HD in A600 with a glue gun and some spare plastic, though.. :-o

Nothing against sticking something against the top, I guess you could flip a small harddisk and use the cage as a heatsink :-D
