Scandoubler/flickerfixer
« on: August 01, 2004, 07:22:06 PM »
I am looking for a good scandoubler/flickerfixer. Any suggestions/advice!

I have a regular A1200D.

I have heard that you can get an external graphics card for the A1200D. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, that will be the graffiti http://www.amiga-hardware.com/graffiti.html

Unfortunately it never get really supported. There are only three games (Trapped I / II, Nemac IV), Shapeshifter and some imageviewers that make use of it.

On the subject of the scandoubler I would advise you get an external one, that can be used with every Amiga in case you ever switch machines. I made good experience with the external Scandex  http://www.amiga-hardware.com/scandex.html
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

The Graffti card supports also the game Gloom. A DCE Scando flickerfixer is also very good. The casing is transparent.

But an internal one doesn't have better quality?

Sure has, as the signalways are much shorter (how much closer can you get pulling them right from the chips) but it will require to open the case and he didn`t sound that familar with the guts of the A1200.
From my experience the external ones don`t lack that much signalquality, plus you can "recycle" it when useing an other Amiga.

An internal SD/FF has better quality indeed, but not really because of the shorter paths (though this is true to an extent). What it's doing is using the digital signals from the chips, rather than redigitising the analogue output on the monitor port. Then again, the difference isn't really that great, and if you feel you'll need it for another Amiga, then go for the external type. Also, some internal units can have trouble with overheating in the confined space in the desktop cosing. I've one in a tower so I haven't had any trouble with it, but best to ask around about a particular model.

Make sure that if you get an internal SD/FF, that you will know how to mount it so that it doesn't just stick out and look ugly.

On one end, it will come with just the VGA port which was originally intended to be mounted through one of the DB9-style cut-out holes, on the back of a tower case.

Putting an internal SD/FF to the original desktop case requires some custom fitting, that is if you want the whole job to look nice.
